Regional Mexican Musician Julio Verdugo Killed in Culiacán, Sinaloa

"Morogris" for Borderland Beat

Regional Mexican music singer Julio Verdugo was murdered early Sunday morning in Culiacan, Sinaloa.

Authorities reported that the 23-year-old man was attacked at around 3:30 a.m. in front of his home, located in Los Huizaches neighborhood, on Las Torres Boulevard and Solidarity Avenue.

The victim was reportedly leaving the home in his Dodge Chrysler truck when he was shot dead by a lone gunman who pulled up from the passenger side. He was shot at point-blank range and was killed instantly. Verdugo was not able to react and his body was found on the driver's seat. Several 9mm bullet casings were collected at the scene.

Julio Verdugo was the lead singer of the group called “Julio Verdugo y Los 3 de Culiacán” (Julio Verdugo and The 3 from Culiacan) and on YouTube his most popular song is “Mi Regalo” (My Gift).

Forensic specialists arrive at the scene to take Verdugo's body to the local morgue

Borderland Beat Analysis

His murder comes week after another regional Mexican music singer, Alex Quintero, was shot to death while at a private party in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora. Days prior, the family of singer Alfredo Olivas were shot dead in broad daylight in Zapopan, Jalisco.

Assaults and murders against Mexican musicians are a common theme in the country's ongoing drug war. In the past, many musicians have been killed by drug gangs for their alleged ties to organized crime, for singing certain ballads glorifying the underworld (songs known as narcocorridos), or sometimes simply for refusing to play more songs to an audience. Anything can get a musician killed in today's violence-torn Mexico.

  2. What is the process for corrido singers? Do they have to get approval to write songs about a certain Cartel? Some corridos singers sing about enemy cartels but others can onpy sing about a specific cartel .please explain.

    2. 2:02 mainly the narcos pay money for them to sing songs about them. Depends how popular the singer is. The more popular the more it costs. Sometimes the artist writes the song then gets it approved .some write songs out of respect if your a bad mothrfkr.but most pay a grip to have a narcocorrido about them.and some be lying bout their self trying to sound bad as fuk when they full of shit.I ain't gonna call nobody out on that shit but lot of people know what I'm talking bout...mainly some are spoiled and got money and lie about their status.but the real g's who put in work know whos bullshittn.thats why the underground corridos are the realest.its fukn dangerous singing corridors tho.hope that answers your ? somewhat..mattsak

    3. If you praise a contra in a song or during a performance, then you're seen as the enemy.

    4. El Fantasma made an entire album in which every song is about a different cartel. Mayos,Chapos,Menchos,Golfos, etc.
So some corridos singers dont need approval?

Before, if you were famous enough, it didn't cost money. Your legend would be enough for some band to sing but those times are gone.
