The man killed in a shootout with security forces in Choix, Sinaloa, over the weekend was confirmed to be Sinaloa Cartel operator Fermín Uriel Jacobo Rábago (age 29), alias "El Colombiano".
The shootout broke out when El Colombiano and his men tied to ambush members of the combined police/military Joint Urban Operations Unit (Base de Operaciones Mixtas Urbanas – BOMU) in Las Tasajeras, a rural community in Choix.
The BOMU, with the help of reinforcements from the National Guard (GN), was able to neutralize the attack and kill El Colombiano. Five suspects were taken into custody. The head of Public Security in Sinaloa, Cristóbal Castañeda, confirmed that authorities also seized several vehicles and weapons owned by El Colombiano's criminal group.
At the time of his death, he had a pending arrest warrant for illegal possession of military-exclusive firearms, which is a Mexico's Federal Law of Firearms and Explosives. He had been arrested in 2015 for the same charge, but he was not convicted and was released.

Background
El Colombiano was cited as a local gang ring leader of Los Jacobo, a Sinaloa Cartel cell in Choix and the regions bordering the state of Chihuahua. The Jacobo family is based in El Real Blanco village and has been involved in the cartel for over a decade. This cell is reportedly headed by Adelmo Núñez Molina ("El Lemo"), a top Sinaloa Cartel lieutenant.
El Colombiano was the son of Fermín Jacobo Renteria (age 60), alias "El Gerente", who was arrested in March 2021. His uncle was Doroteo Jacobo Renteria, alias "El Teo", who in July 2020 was nearly captured in a shootout with elements of the BOMU.
Choix Municipality has had several violent episodes this year. As reported by Borderland Beat, there is an internal power struggle in the Sinaloa Cartel cell based in Choix since Felix Jacobo (age 51) and three other men were killed in January 2020.
