The National Guard (GN) and the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) announced that they have deployed over 1,500 soldiers to the state of Michoacan to reinforce operations and help reduce cartel-related homicides.
According to the official press release, the deployment will initially take place in the municipalities of Zamora, Jacona, Chavinda, Tingüindín and Tangancícuaro, in order to strengthen public security, in accordance with the "National Plan for Peace and Security 2018-2024". Over 50 homicides have been committed in these municipalities since May.
From 2020 to date, Zamora is ranked among the most violent municipalities in Mexico, followed closely by Uruapan and Morelia, where homicides, kidnapping, rape, and extortions, increased by 40 percent when compared to 2015.
According to the Michoacan Attorney General's Office (FGE), 2,456 murdered were committed in the state last year. Close to half of them were registered in Zamora, Jacona, Uruapan and Morelia.
Michoacan has been on the international spotlight several times this year due to the rising violence and disputes between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and Carteles Unidos (CU). Most of the violence has been in or around the Tierra Caliente region.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) came to power in 2018 pledging to transform the failed public security strategies of his predecessors and reduce militarization.
Nevertheless, security experts say that he has failed to demilitarize public security; on the contrary, he has deepened various aspects of the militarized model by granting the military more responsibility in other realms of public security.
