Three More US Citizens Go Missing Near Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas

"Morogris" for Borderland Beat
The border city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, is again on the international spotlight after a mother and her two children, all US citizens, went missing while driving through a rural highway.

Investigators say that the family was in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, visiting family. When they drove back to Laredo, Texas on Sunday, they disappeared on the highway leading to Nuevo Laredo. The woman was driving a yellow 2014 Chevrolet Sonic with Texas license plates. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle never made it across the US-Mexico border.

According to official figures, over 20 people have gone missing this year while driving from Nuevo Laredo to Monterrey. Other figures from civil organizations say that the number could be up to 50, with 15 of them occurring this past May.

At least 6 US citizens have gone missing in or near Nuevo Laredo this year, making it one of the most dangerous places for US citizens on Mexican soil.

In this most recent case, the Nuevo León Attorney General's Office issued a search report for the disappearance of Gladys Cristina Pérez Sánchez, 39, and her children Juan Carlos González, 16, and Michelle Cristina Durán, 9, respectively.

Borderland Beat Analysis

This case brings Nuevo Laredo back to spotlight, especially given the fact that several US citizens have gone missing in the area this year.

In mid-March, three women from Laredo, Texas, disappeared after crossing to Nuevo Laredo for a doctor's appointment. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) believes they were kidnapped.

The following month, a man from Arkansas, disappeared near Nuevo Laredo after visiting his girlfriend in Monterrey. His whereabouts are also unknown.

In late May, two more US citizens from Houston, Texas, disappeared after they crossed the border into Nuevo Laredo. They were heading to San Luis Potosi to visit a sick relative. They never made it to their destination.

Full route the family intended to take from Sabinas Hidalgo (B) to Laredo (A). Authorities advise that drivers avoid driving in this part of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas at night.

Nuevo Laredo is under the control of the Northeast Cartel (Cartel del Noreste, CDN), a splintered group of the old Zetas cartel. It is rival to the Gulf Cartel (Cartel del Golfo, CDG), based east of Nuevo Laredo all the way to Matamoros.

In the past, the CDN has targeted American drivers in Nuevo Laredo by forcing them to pay money or "cartel tax" (cuota). Most of these incident happened near Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue, which connects Nuevo Laredo with the federal highway leading to Monterrey.

A source consulted by Borderland Beat confirmed that the cartel has several outlooks posted across the highway that notify other cartel members of potential targets driving through. Borderland Beat published a story with videos showing how the CDN sets up blockades to extort drivers.

It is unknown is the US family of three made it to the Mexican Federal Highway 85D, a toll highway (autopista) that connects Sabinas Hidalgo to Nuevo Laredo. The kidnapping could have occurred on the non-toll (libre) road that connects with the federal highway.

    1. You think so powerless not really, you want to see the millions in aid yearly to fight the war on drugs go to zero. Obrador has a lot to lose, should he meddle with USA.

AID is the problem. US arms both sides like usual. They just elected a crackhead in Biden.

It's not about morality it's about power. They started a war and now Mexico supposedly "needs" the US.

Why does Mexico need the approval of the US for arms? They can buy elsewhere or make their own.

  5. You gotta think that the U.S has some figurative "line in the sand" which when crossed will trigger a U.S. response-Soveringty only goes so far. Ask Iraq.

  6. Right now I think it's better to cross at Matamoros, that highway to Victoria and then to San Luis, is pretty much four lane and doesn't get that much play.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe, but the Matamoros/Victoria highway is non-toll. Not very long ago it used to be called the "Highway of Death".

The issue, I think, is that many people still continue to take the "libre" road to Monterrey/San Luis instead of toll or federal highways just so they can save money.

I also think Texas plates are a problem. It's much safer to rent a car with Tamaulipas plates to move around through Nuevo Laredo and Nuevo Leon.

  8. This will happen all over Mexico if drugs are legalized and drug cartels are dismantled. They will shift their operations to other forms of income via kidnappings, extortion, human trafficking, etc. these things already happen but if you think it’s bad now, it will be much worse.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Why? Are Mexicans inherently given to criminal enterprises? So racist.

      Delete
    2. Even if drugs are legalized, we are talking marijuana and Hash maybe a few others,Heroin, Cocaine, and Meth will NEVER be legalized. Amsterdam permits weed and hashish while the big 3 drugs are still illegal yet the drug underworld is doing just fine there. Who knows what can be done?? All we can say definitively is that the war on drugs is the most colossal legal failure ever. It continues because doing nothing morally seems wrong. Smh

it continues because like you said the "big three can never be legalized"...what you might want to consider saying in the future goes a little something like this...

"drugs can be bad but prohibition is worse 110% of the time. nothing is what we did during prohibition, and look what happened, political corruption, high crime, high costs of drugs and uncertain purity resulting in death and overall decrease in quality of life and social cohesion. doing something means not letting the prison law enforcement appartus take over our country, doing something means not treating someone who happens to enjoy using a substance other than coffee nicotine alcohol or a multitude of pre perscribed only perscriptions like a god dang pariah, doing something means learning to respect others and trust in individual liberty, doing something means the state cant convince you to buy their solution, as anything but them getting out of the way presents more problems and adds fuel to the fire. doing something is realizing everything is learned, drugs are inatimate objects they possess no personifcation. ie they cant be good or evil, they can be used responsibily or dangerously. we have already have laws for if someone decides to get wreckless while intoxicated. the ability to get intoxicated isnt made illegal the other harmful act is. hence users of the so called big three dont usually die if they are schooled in using correctly ie how not to die, illegality throws a huge variable into this possibility because people have to roll the dice on what they are buying. oh its being sold as heroin suprise its a deadly dose of fentanyl brought to you by prohibition inc enjoy...

Doing something means DOING SOMETHING. bcuz right now all i see is a bunch of people deligating responsibility to the state to fix all social ills, this WILL contribute substantially to the down fall of this nation if a change of course not implemented asap like 10 years ago now. do something friend, you can and will feel good about that.

    cheers &
    amen
