The message sent by paramilitaries and members of United Cartels (Cárteles Unidos, CU) in recent days is clear: a million-dollar reward for those who can identify Santiago Quintero Magallon, head of the Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) of the municipality of Buenavista, Michoacan .

The hunt against the alleged narco began last Sunday, July 11, around 5:00 p.m. Miguel Ángel Gutiérrez Aguilar, alias El Kiro, leader of the Tepalcatepec self-defense groups, warned his family that they were being followed. The desperate situation - since El Kiro was traveling with his wife and children - ended with the kidnapping of the self-defense group and his family as reported by Borderland Beat.

This man, a lieutenant of CJNG, wanted to ambush - without any mercy - all those self-defense groups who tried to defend El Kiro. What they did not count on is that the vigilantes would arrive armed to the teeth and in a convoy of 30 trucks. The municipality was shattered, but they were able to rescue the leader of the self-defense groups. From that day on, armed civilians and the criminals of the United Cartels and Los Viagras “combed” the Buenavista municipality where, according to what they were told, the Maguey is hidden.

The CJNG has already entered the municipalities of Uruapan and Zamora and is trying to advance through the mountains towards Buenavista to recover the territory. The self-defense groups assure that their intention is not to assassinate people, so they have released the CJNG hitmen they had detained. The situation has remained tense ever since. On Tuesday, July 20, the Tepalcatepec community police reported the fifth attack so far this week.

State authorities assure that the latest episodes of violence in Michoacán are part of the macabre strategy known as "heating up the plaza." According to the Ministry of Public Security of Michoacán, a command of the criminal group CU - a conglomerate of criminal cells from Michoacán such as Los Viagras, the Caballeros Templarios, Los Blancos de Troya and los Botos - was deployed in the municipality of Buenavista, where the CJNG maintains its bases of operations.

In response, CJNG attacked the offices of the town of Tarecuato, as well as businesses, causing the death of a resident. The atmosphere of violence took place after the elections in Mexico on June 6, which has been marred by waves of assassinations.
