Colombia Provides More Evidence Against Genaro García Luna

Colombian authorities presented new evidence against Genaro Garica Luna, former Secretary of Public Security of Mexico, for his upcoming trial in Brooklyn, New York.

The documents were turned in to the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York and shown to Cesar de Castro, Genaro Garcia Luna's private attorney, for review.

The exact nature of the evidence presented is unknown, but reports say it included property records and financial statements.

Over a decade ago, when he was still in public office and has already suspected of cartel collusion, Garcia Luna received the Medal of Merit in May 2011 from former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, who highlighted Garcia Luna's "support for the Colombian police".

With the new government, Colombia now wants to help US prosecutors convict him.

García Luna was Secretary of Public Security of Mexico from 2006 to 2012, during the presidency of Felipe Calderon. He left Mexico at the end of Calderon's presidency and moved to Miami, where he established permanent residency. In 2018, he filed for US citizenship. However, he was arrested in Texas in December 2019 after being accused by federal authorities in New York of supporting the Sinaloa Cartel.

Investigators say he provided protection to the cartel and received millions of dollars from Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, once considered Mexico's most-wanted drug lord.

Garcia Luna hid more than US$50 million dollars in tax havens through a network of companies. The places he laundered money included the US, Mexico, Barbados, Hong Kong, Israel, Latvia, Panama, Colombia, the UK, Cyprus, and Curaçao.

Last month, US federal judge Brian Cogan accepted the request of the defense and prosecutors to postpone the trial until August 25 due to the "complexity" of the case. The new evidence presented by Colombia adds more fuel to the flames; countries like Mexico, the US, Barbados, and Panama have already presented evidence against him.

  1. Complexity for the US in any case is rare. If the US wants something they will have it.

    2. @11:21 I will assume you are from the United States. Didn’t you guys went to Iraq to kill thousands of civilians? Isn’t your police killing thousands of unarmed civilians? Isn’t your country the number one in mass shooting cases in the world? And just to finish this. If you watch the murder shows from your country you will know that the way this Cartel criminals usually kill is the same way you people do it in the USA. Mutilations decapitations burning bodies cannibalism and much more. Our savagery started 20 years ago. You guys started more than 100 years ago.

    5. @12:40 pm. Those were offerings to the Gods based on the highest priest. Is not like if we will accuse people of devil worshiping, witchcraft or other sins to kill them by burning people alive crucified decapitated or impaled them just on beliefs of Christian priest. But what do I know.

    10. That’s right @6:21 am. More than 200 thousand civilians died during the war and occupation and about 400 thousands were killed during the civil war. So yes the actions of the Iraq invasion are to be blamed. Iraq didn’t had weapons of mass destruction but you know who does ? North Korea. Obviously USA will never attempt to attack North Korea because they know it would not be like Iraq. North Korea does pack a punch.
