Jorge Iván Gastelum Avila, alias "El Cholo Iván", the former security chief of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, is closed to being extradited to the United States.
A tribunal court in the State of Mexico announced this week that they refused to revert the extradition request issued against El Cholo Ivan.
According to court records, the US government issued the extradition request in May 2020. El Cholo Ivan was notified of this request two months later and was given 60 days to appeal. After his attorneys issued multiple motions, a federal court notified the US Embassy that they had approved his extradition on November 2020.
But El Cholo Ivan's defense team continued to appeal and sent their case to a tribunal court for a final decision. This week's announcement virtually sets El Cholo Ivan on a clear path to US extradition.
Background
Jorge Ivan Gastelum Cruz, better known as El Cholo Ivan, was one of the 122 priority objectives of the Mexican government. He was born in May 17, 1981, in the small town of Los Caballeros, in the municipality of Badiraguato, Sinaloa.
According to official information, he became involved in organized crime at the age of 14 by collecting cartel plaza payments, by orders of his dad, Honorio Gastelum Avila, alias "El Cobra", who was reportedly a hitman working for El Chapo.
Over the years, El Cholo Ivan also became a hitman and was later promoted to one of the top leadership roles in Culiacan.
In August 2005, he was arrested by federal agents in Culiacan. He escaped from prison in 2009 by walking out of the main entrance while the guards were hosting a party.
He was accused of the murder of two Sinaloa state cops in 2009 as an act of vengeance because those two officers were accused of killing his father.
In November 2012, the Mexican Army killed his girlfriend Maria Susana Flores Games in a shootout. She was a former beauty pageant in Sinaloa.
El Cholo Ivan was arrested in 2016 along with El Chapo and has been in prison ever since.

He was from estacion naranjo. He was also known as Chilo or el 02. Most Mexicans don’t read or understand English, so no. But BB does have some readers from states like Jalisco, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas, Chihuahua, Sonora, Nuevo León. Etc. I live in Monterrey (northern Mexico) and check a few sites out every other day or so, including BB. A few friends know of BB or have seen it at least.
