Cártel del Golfo (CDG) hitmen attacked a State Police vehicle in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. After a fierce fight, the CDG vehicle crashed and burst into flames that burned alive at least three hitmen inside.
The vehicles ended up on Constituyentes Avenue in the República Sur neighborhood of Matamoros. The officers attempted to repel the aggression but the firepower of the hitmen was overwhelming. Audio of gunfire that is alleged to have been recorded in Matamoros on the night of August 27, 2021 can be heard below. This is reportedly the fire power that was being used against the officers as part of this incident. The driver of the police vehicle then decided to ram their vehicle head on into the armed men’s SUV.
The straight-on collision can be seen to have destroyed both vehicles in photos of the aftermath. The police vehicle appears to have pushed the armed men’s vehicle into a fence and it somehow burst into flames.
Based on the photos available, at least three hitmen were burned alive inside their vehicle in the immediate aftermath of the crash. Whether there were more hitmen inside who burned or any who managed to escape is unknown at this time. Three policemen were injured as a result of the car crash with the other vehicle.

In a separate incident, Tamaulipas State Police officers were driving in a patrol vehicle on the Reynosa - Matamoros highway when a group of armed men attempted to ambush them. The armed men were riding inside a white pickup truck from which they were firing high powered firearms. The attackers fled when they saw that the police repelled the attack and as they fled they forced a trailer driver to block the road with his flatbed truck, creating a blockade which shielded them from police pursuit.
It is generally believed that Matamoros has two groups of Cartel del Golfo operating within it: Espartanos and Ciclones. Which faction is responsible for the aggression on officers on August 27 is unknown at this time.
