Cartel del Noroeste left a mannequin and a narcomanta hung from a bridge in Monterrey, Nuevo León.
On the morning of September 14, 2021, several motorists noticed what they believed to be a dead human body hung from a bridge located in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León. The bridge was crossing over the road of Ruíz Cortinez Avenue, near the intersection of Ruíz Cortinez with Bernardo Reyes. The body was hanging just under a billboard advertisement, dangling to the right of a surveillance security camera.
Some motorists alerted the 911 emergency phone line and police officers were dispatched to the reported location. Officers located the hanging display on the south side of the bridges, dangling from west to east of Ruiz Cortines. On scene, authorities lifted the “body” and it quickly became clear that it was not a human body due to the lightness of the object they were pulling up.

The city of Monterrey is the largest urban area in northern Mexico; this important metropolitan area is considered to be a business hub.
An eight year study of the homicides in the Monterrey metropolitan area, published in Nature, a prominent scientific journal, revealed that an elevated number of homicides occur close to the 85th freeway, which connects Monterrey with the US border.
This freeway being the much discussed “highway of death” that extends between Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon where an irodiante amount of kidnappings occur. The freeways, as compared with the toll roads, tend to have more cartel activity. For more information on the distinction in safety between the freeways and toll roads, please see this article by MX.
Regardless, the study also revealed that some socioeconomic barriers determine the presence of homicide violence in Monterrey. More importantly it revealed that Monterrey has seen a decline in homicides ever since 2011-2012. The study attributes this to several leaders of both the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas groups being captured or killed around 2011 and 2012. They also attribute it to Governor Rodrigo Medina launching the Fuerza Civil de Nuevo León, a State security force with special training and external certification in 2013.
