At the end of August, Emma's sentencing was rescheduled for October 14, but now it has been re-rescheduled for November 30.
The following is a direct translation of a September 10, 2021 article from El Universal.
The sentencing of Emma Coronel, the wife of Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, has been postponed, now to November.
"The sentencing of defendant Emma Coronel Aispuro currently scheduled for September 15, 2021 at 14H00 (...) is rescheduled for November 30, 2021 at 12H00 before Judge Rudolph Contreras" of the federal court in Washington, according to official documents.
Earlier, on Aug. 27, in documents filed in the court's electronic system, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia and Coronel's lawyers submitted a letter to Judge Rudolph Contreras asking that instead of Sept. 15 the sentencing be on Oct. 14 or later. Contreras agreed to the request in another document.
"Due to other obligations that have arisen and the nature of this case, both parties (prosecution and defense) believe that additional time is necessary to adequately prepare for sentencing," the letter from the attorneys and the government reads.
That document was signed by attorneys Jeffrey Lichtman and Mariel Colón, who are defending Coronel, and attorney Katharine Wagner, who works for the government.
In June, Coronel pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges after being accused in the United States of helping her husband run a multimillion-dollar drug trafficking empire. The Mexican-American pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana; money laundering; and involvement in transactions involving property belonging to a drug trafficker.
Guzman, one of the world's most powerful drug traffickers, ran the Sinaloa cartel, which was responsible for trafficking cocaine and other drugs into the United States for more than 25 years. In Mexico, Guzman became a legend after twice escaping from prison. In 2017, however, he was extradited to the United States and is now serving life in prison. Coronel is incarcerated in Virginia.
