"Socalj" for Borderland Beat
From collaborating witness to drug boss, SEMAR & FGR captured Esther Huitrón, leader of Guerreros Unidos.
On November 6, she was arrested in Oaxtepec, Morelos, while wearing platform sandals, tight jeans, and long nails.
For a long time, Huitrón Vázquez was persecuted by the authorities more than for her power and knowledge of the alleged links of the Sinaloa Cartel and Navy officials during the administration of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012). That is how she became a collaborating witness for the defunct Attorney General's Office (PGR).
Her statements took José Gerardo Ortega Maya, former advisor to the former Secretary of the Navy, Francisco Saynez Mendoza, and Juan Carlos de la Barrera Vite, a former official of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, to jail. Her intimacy with various politicians in the country increased the image of a woman away from organized crime. La Jefa, according to the newspaper Reforma, aired her friendship with officials of the Movimiento Ciudadano, PRI, and Progressive Social Networks parties, whose state leader is Huitrón Vázquez's sister.
The capture was carried out with total discretion; however, Governor Cuauhtémoc Blanco aired the information through his social networks, despite the fact that state authorities did not participate in the arrest.
The capture of La Jefa is the latest in the high-level structure of the Guerreros Unidos cartel, which in 2014 occupied the main pages of the national and international press for the case of the young normalistas. According to journalist Óscar Balderas, seven years after that event, the criminal organization is on the way to extinction.
The founder of Guerreros Unidos, Mario Casarruvias Salgado died on July 25 at the Military Hospital in Mexico City due to the coronavirus. Reports indicate that this man nicknamed the Handsome Toad caught the virus in the Altiplano prison, where he was admitted since April 2017.
Casarruvias is the brother of Sidrionio and José Ángel, El Mochomo, also prisoners in this maximum-security prison. Along with them, other leaders have fallen from grace. According to security analysts, from being one of the most infamous cartels in Mexico, Guerrero Unidos became irrelevant, hence the fact that its name is heard in a few places in Guerrero and Morelos.
Last August, the United States government closed the case against eight Guerreros Unidos criminals linked to the Ayotzinapa case. According to the files of these bosses, five of them are free, and the rest are in agreement with the US.
The beheading of the criminal group, says Balderas, could give way to the birth of a more infamous and dangerous cell identified as Los Numeros, a gang of criminals that threatens to set Tierra Caliente on fire.
