Mayor Jorge Magaña confirmed a shootout in Mazamitla between groups of armed civilians on Sunday, May 1. The violence occurred around 14:00 hours, near the town of La Estacada.
In his social networks he urged residents and tourists to take shelter in their homes or hotels, not to expose themselves to public places and to remain calm.
The municipal president affirmed that the official social networks will be informing about the situation.
"We ask the population in these difficult moments to remain calm, I will be informing them about the situation. There are reports of violence in the vicinity of the municipal capital".
What happened in Mazamitla this May 1st?
The shootout in Mazamitla between alleged rival organized crime groups led to the deployment of personnel from the Ministry of National Defense, National Guard, State and Municipal Police to protect citizens and tourists.
In addition to the armed confrontation, three road blockades were reported in different towns between the borders of Jalisco and Michoacán.
The points with burned automobiles are:
A dump truck that was made to dump its load of gravel at the exit to Tuxcueca and blocked in both directions. A tractor-trailer set on fire at the southern exit of the municipality on the Mazamitla to Tamazula highway. Tractor truck blocked at the north entrance of Mazamitla. The Secretary of Security of Jalisco asked the population to travel with caution and give way to emergency vehicles, as well as to be informed through official social networks.
Governor Enrique Alfaro stressed that the shooting stopped around 4:00 p.m. and there are no casualties in the security forces. Alfaro added that an operation is being carried out in the area to arrest those responsible. Patrols are being carried out by land and air. The Security Secretariat confirmed three civilians killed in connection with these violent acts.
