"HEARST" for Borderland Beat
As previously reported by Sol in this article, two elderly Jesuit priests were shot to death while they were inside a church in Cerocahui, in the state of Chihuahua. Their dead bodies were then removed from the church by cartel members.
Now, their bodies have finally been found and recovered from a second location.
The Church Shooting
The shooting occurred on Monday, June 20, 2022, within the small town of Cerocahui, which is located within the municipality of Urique, in the south western part of the state of Chihuahua. It lies within the Copper Canyon region which contains six distinct canyons. The walls of the canyons are a copper/green color, which is the origin of the name.
The town of Ceroahui was founded back in 1680 by a Jesuit priest and the town is still most known for its church, called San Jose de Cerocahui Mission Church.
As time passes and more media attention surrounds the murder, more and more details about the chain of events which led to the homicides have emerged. This is what we can gather so far based on the currently available details:
The Chihuahua State Attorney General Roberto Fierro stated that two men, who were brothers, had recently played in a baseball game against a team sponsored by Sinaloa Cartel member José Noriel Portillo Gil, alias “El Chueco”. The baseball game had ended in an argument after Portillo's team lost. In an act of retaliation during an unstated time, one of the two brothers was shot inside his home and then his house was set on fire.
Fierro said that a man named Pedro Eliodoro Palma Gutiérrez, who worked as a tour guide for visitors to the Chihuahua area, was attacked by cartel gunmen in relation to “the abduction of four persons earlier in the day,” on Monday, June 20, 2022.
It is believed that two men, one woman and one child were abducted. It is unclear if the two brothers from the baseball game are the same as the two men who were kidnapped. Or if Pedro Palma is the brother who was shot. The lack of clarity in regard to these details is frustrating, to say the least.
All we do know is that after the abduction of the four people, tour guide Pedro Eliodoro Palma Gutiérrez was attacked and he walked into San Jose de Cerocahui Mission Church having been badly wounded by cartel gunmen just minutes earlier.
When Pedro Palma entered the church, three priests were present inside. One of these priests was Javier Campos Morales, known as Father Gallo, who was 79 years old. Another priest present was Father Joaquín César Mora Salazar who was 80 years old.
The dioceses stated that the two priests began “exercising their duty of physically and spiritually aiding a person who was dying”, referring to the wounded Pedro Palma. It is likely this statement means the priests were trying to medically aid Pedro, such as applying pressure to a bleeding wound, as well as possibly performing the Catholic ritual of last rites.
Then -either a single or multiple- cartel gunmen entered the church and shot the two priests and tour guide dead “at close range”. The gunman chose not to kill the third priest inside the church and this priest’s testimony is where most of these details derive from.
The third priest said he pleaded with the gunman not to take the bodies of those they had killed away but the gunmen [or gunman] ignored him.
The bodies of the three were then taken away by a group of men in the back of a pickup truck according to a radio interview with Luis Gerardo Moro, head of the Jesuits in Mexico.
Other Tellings of the Shooting
The news publication Texas Border Business tells the chain of events somewhat differently, writing:
"The criminal group, identified with Los Salazar and linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, had kidnapped Pedro Heliodoro Palma, a renowned community tour guide, at the Hotel Misión, and took him to the San Francisco Javier parish to say goodbye [last rites?]. But apparently, he tried to escape there and was killed by the alleged aggressor, José Noriel Portillo, alias 'El Chueco.'
One of the priests immediately approached him to provide spiritual assistance, and, at the moment that he was giving spiritual services, El Chueco shot him and killed him. Another of the priests wanted to help him and was also killed. After killing the three, El Chueco and his accomplices took the bodies,"
In yet another slightly different version, the Jesuit priest Javier Ávila alleges that all three priests had known El Chueco since he was a child.
Javier Ávila describes the chain of events all follows:
"El Chueco shot the tour guide Pedro Eliodoro inside the church and one of the priests ran to help and was also shot.
The second priest arrived and stood before El Chueco, telling him 'calm down, what is wrong with you' and was also shot.
A third priest, Jesus Reyes, who, like the other two priests, had known El Chueco since he was a child, got him to stop and El Chueco began to speak with him for about an hour, eventually asked for forgiveness and having confession.
Father Reyes tried to convince El Chueco to leave the three bodies in the church, however armed men took the bodies in the back of a pickup truck."
On June 21, 2022, the Diocese of the Tarahumara Mountains of Western Chihuahua released a letter which revealed publicly that the priests’ bodies were missing. “Not satisfied with killing them, the assassins took their bodies, which share the fate of so many disappeared ones that leave behind pain, sadness and outrage among those who loved them,” the diocese said in a statement.
Two of the four people who were abducted have since been released. During a presidential press conference, President Obrador revealed that the child abducted had been released. Then, later press reports alleged that the adult woman had also been released by her captors.
Then on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 22, multiple news sites reported that the missing bodies of the priests had now been recovered.
Criminal groups in the Urique and Bocoyna region are often involved in illegal logging. Bocoyna, for example, has over 200 sawmills, many of them within the town of San Juanito. These sawmills process both legal and illegal wood from the surrounding area and provide employment to the town. According to a 2020 report, about half of these sawmills belong to and/or cooperate with La Línea. The other half pays extortion fees (known as piso) to operate in the area.

Urique contains numerous gold, silver, and zinc mining operations in the area that both the Sinaloa Cartel and Línea compete for. These two cartels rob mines, extort mining companies, and even kidnap workers.
So what do we know about José Noriel Portillo Gil, alias “El Chueco”? El Chueco is a regional leader for Sinaloa Cartel's subgroup Los Salazars, which he reportedly joined in 2012, when he was 26 years old.
El Chueco is reported to control the area of Urique and Uruachi, along with parts of Creel. In April 2017 he was falsely reported to have been killed in a shootout which left 8 people dead and 5 individuals kidnapped at a quinceañera.
In September 2020, newspaper El Heraldo de Chihuahua reported that El Chueco had El Tavo, Chapo Calin and El Servandito working under him. Some reports, like this article from Acento, allege that Chueco reports to Ruperto Salgueiro Nevárez, alias El 37, the leader of Los Salgueiros however Chueco's Los Salazar affiliation casts doubt on this claim.
Allegedly one of his direct reports is someone with the alias "El Tavo" who operates in Creel, in Bocoyna municipality. Few further details such as a name not any photos of El Tavo are available online. Meanwhile Chapo Calin, also known as "El 13", was arrested the morning of August 10, 2021 by members of the military and National Guard in Guachochi, Batopilas, a town which he was described as being the leader of.
The murder of the Jesuits is not the first time El Checo's violence has drawn the ire of the US media The Chihuahua state governor has attributed the November 2018 murder of a North Carolina school teacher named Patrick Braxton-Andrew to El Chueco.
In the case of the school teacher, El Chueco allegedly thought the foreign tourist worked for the DEA. Before his disappearance, Patrick had been seen talking to locals, which made Chueco nervous, according to information gathered by El Sol de Chihuahua.
In April 2022, it was reported that federal forces were close to capturing Chueco during the rescue of a kidnapping victim, but Chueco managed to escape. The rescue operation did, however, lead to the arrest of two individuals who were found to be in possession of an arsenal of 65 long barrel firearms and 16 short barrel firearms, in addition to 14 grenades, grenade launchers, magazines and cartridges.
The photo seen above was released on late Wednesday, June 22, 2022, when the FGE officially announced that El Chueco was their main suspect in the triple homicide in the church and offered a $5 million peso reward. The photo appears to be the most recent image available of Chueco.
Statement by the Pope
Pope Francis, who much like the deceased has served as a Jesuit priest to a spanish-speaking community during violent times, said the following:
I also express my sorrow and dismay at the killing, in Mexico the day before yesterday, of two Jesuit religious – my confreres – and a layman. How many killings there are in Mexico! With affection and prayer, I am close to the Catholic community affected by this tragedy. Once again, I repeat that violence does not solve problems, but increases unnecessary suffering.
Statement by the Jesuits of Mexico
A statement was released by the Jesuits of Mexico, which reads as follows:
The Jesuits of Mexico, with deep pain, denounce the murder of our brothers Javier Campos Morales, SJ and Joaquín César Mora Salazar, SJ, which occurred yesterday inside the community temple from Cerocahui, Chihuahua. We condemn these violent acts, we demand justice and the recovery of the bodies of our brothers who were taken from the temple by armed persons. We also demand that all protective measures be adopted immediately to safeguard the lives of our Jesuit brothers, sisters, lay people and the entire Cerocahui community.Facts like these are not isolated. The Sierra Tarahumara, like many other regions of the country, faces conditions of violence and neglect that have not been reversed. Every day men and women are senselessly deprived of life, just like how our brothers were murdered today. The Jesuits of Mexico will not remain silent in the face of the reality that blights all of society. We will continue to be present and working for the mission of justice, reconciliation and peace, through our pastoral, educational and social works.By denouncing what happened, we also note the pain that our people are experiencing due to the prevailing violence and we stand in solidarity with so many people who suffer from the same situation, who go on without their suffering ever arousing empathy and public attention. We trust that the testimonies of Christian life of our dear Javier and Joaquín continue to inspire men and women to give themselves in the service of the most vulnerable.
The Two Priests
Border Report detailed the following:
In their private conversations, the now deceased Father Gallo used to tell Vicar Mario Manrriquez that he was concerned about the poverty, drug trafficking and growing drug addiction rates in the mountains of Western Chihuahua, which include several Indigenous communities.
“He was always looking for ways to help the people. He spoke about hunger and the lack of medicines. That’s what worried him the most,” Manrriquez told Border Report. Despite all that, “he never asked to be reassigned and he never wanted to leave the mountains.”
“Everywhere you look there is impunity, every [act of violence] is muddled. They [the authorities] just blame organized crime and that seems to be a free pass for operating with impunity,” Manrriquez said, “we don’t know exactly what happened (in Cerocahui), but people frequently come into the church seeking the priest’s help and we don’t ask for ID, we don’t ask where they come from. All kinds of human beings come to us and they are all people we need to hear out, to help, to serve.”
“There’s no respect for life, not even for women or children,” he said, reflecting on recent mass shootings in Juarez, including one last week inside a Denny’s Restaurant when two women and two men were shot dead while sitting at a table celebrating one of the women’s birthdays. A patron who tried to run away also was shot, but survived, according to the state police.
Manrriquez said he regrets the murder of his peers, but he hopes it will help people realize that most men of the cloth are good people who dedicate their lives to helping others.
Border Report also spoke to Father Alfredo Roana who said he doesn’t know if the killers were aware the men they were gunning down were priests, or if they were locals who should’ve known or hired guns from elsewhere. But when asked if he would have done the same thing – stand up for a wounded man being pursued by assassins – he said he would.
“At that moment, you don’t weigh the consequences. Our calling, our training is to stand up for others. If that person comes in, you protect him. Maybe you don’t expect to get shot, but even knowing the possibility of it - it does not stop you,” Roana said.

VIVID RECOUNT OF THE EVENTS
ReplyDeleteDrives me a little crazy that I couldn't give you guys a definitive retelling of the chain of events. The story got so messy with this many versions of what happened but hopefully if you can sit through all the tellings, the general idea of what happened becomes clear.
Delete4:19 having lived through the military takeover and terror in Argentina, when the US/ México "War ON Drugs" started, Pope Francisco warned about the "Colombianization of México"
DeleteHaving studied the Balkan wars I knew it used to be Balkanization, and it never fails to turn everybody and their dog into enemies...
I don't know how shit like this gets fixed up, but mexican cartulinas in chiguauguau' mountains did not build their weapons with their supercomputer technology.
Heads need to roll,
but whose heads?
Baseball?
Hearst:
DeleteYour work is profoundly appreciated.
@4:19
DeleteITS DEFINITELY CLEAR ALRIGHT.
NO NEED TO OVERANALYZE THE SITUATION, NOTHING JUSTIFIES KILLING 3 PEOPLE INSIDE A CHURCH. THEN BEING CYNICAL ENOUGH TO STICK AROUND TO ASK FOR FORGIVENESS AND REPENTANCE, TO THE SAME PRIEST WHO WITNESSED THE TRIPLE HOMICIDE, WHOM YOU PARDONED THE LIFE OF.
EL CHUECO IS A MURDEROUS DIRTBAG, STUDENTS, JOURNALISTS, PRIEST, TOUR GUIDES, BASEBALL PLAYERS---- BLOODTHIRSTY BASTARD.

I read articles with all caps, they both read it to comment.you have more to sAy than non capos
DeleteAt 12.36 ALLCAPS DUDE. The whole point of analyzing, or 'over-analyzing' as you call it, is to find out whether or not what you say happened actually DID happen. It's important.

ReplyDeleteI believe Mayo has lost complete control of CDS.
ReplyDelete????? How??? Please explain
Delete12:22 he cant control his sicarios no more
DeleteMy understanding is that El Mayo is low key and doesn't like to draw attention to his activities. He may be seriously ill or may have died, would be good guesses.
DeleteNo one can control their Sicarios.
DeleteKingpins' heads need to pay for their butchers' sins, but you can't really blame the kingpins for their babies sins, the "State" allows illegal mining and logging and the crooked arseholes that grow into this kind of criminals that would not have money for headaches, much less for weapons and bullets.
DeleteNo, those groups are subcontract from cartel... just like "mexicles", "aztecas", "artistas asesinos", "Gente Nueva del Tigre", "Los Pelones", Los Salazar", etc... are groups contracted for specific missions and time. They are not neccesarily part of a cartel nor strictly related to the entire operations. So, those groups work for the cartel, but arent part of it. CDS is now targetting el chueco, they had to stop operations in half of Chihuahua because of him.
DeleteGente Nueva is directly aligned with CDS. Subgroup or not they report directly ro CDS.
DeleteThis is not the first time CDS shitters have done such things either. In Durango a few years ago mass graves were found containing over 300 bodies including other dead priests they killed among musicians and radio perdonalities that simply spoke bad about the narco culture. In the Valkey of Juared they killed an entire baseball team because this team tried to protect a single member of theirs CDS wanted dead. The people killed ranged in age from 18 to 22 years of age and even a 9 year old girl got caught and killed in the indiscrminate shooting these guys perpetrated.
Idiots just don't want to admit that CDS does such things.
I've always gotten the impression that Gente Nueva groups were more loyal to the Sinaloa family they work under the umbrella of, like Salazar or Salgueieros, then they were to other Gente Nueva groups.
DeleteBut I heard from two more experienced contributors that Gente Nueva groups were more loyal to other GN subgroups so that's what I use on my map keys.
But if you guys have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
Gente Nueva remains loyal to CDS period!
DeleteSalazars and other Gente Nueva groups are simply lead by different bosses all loyal to CDS.
There is no difference to who they report to!
10:33 calm down no one cares
DeleteOn June 23th 2022 messages from the Juarez Cartel were hanged on two main bridges/avenues in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua. Mentioning the support given to the Sinaloa Cartel from governor "Maru" Campos.
ReplyDeleteFor reals dude where's the picture?
Delete"Maru" Campos is from PAN party, gone governor Javierr Corrrall could never control Chiguauguau crime...
Delete5 star general of the US Armies John Pershing, alias "Black Jack" with help of Patton and "Dugout Doug" Douglas Mac Arthur and 10 000 us cavalry could never catch Pancho Villa, unless they wanted to rent back the airplanes Villa stole from them, Sinaloa Cartel wasn't there to help Villa
there are pictures on local media, still recent, and i have the entire message on them. This is the third time she receives narco mantas mentioning her links to CDS and Juarez Cartel.... ;)
DeleteEl chueco needs to be straightened out (with a barbed steel rod up his ass)
ReplyDeleteAint the first time El torcido has killed a innocent
ReplyDeleteAwesome article
ReplyDeleteCJNG steals cars, CDS kills priests!
ReplyDeleteEquals they both trash
DeleteSimon, Chapitos don't have control of their people. All of the Sinaloa cheerleaders should read this article.
DeleteDoesn't matter if you Budhist, Moro, or Catholic, these dead priests are not in the game and should be off limits. A man has to have a code and this shows Chueco aint no man. Chapitos have to give him up so get their people back in line.
Cars or properties are replaceable, lives are not you Doofus! Another CDS apologist
Delete1:27 a little different, what would you rather get your car stolen or getting capped for no reason
DeleteI think Chueco has lost it! Or just too drugged out to think straight..
ReplyDeleteNo kidding. Thinking a lone gringo walking around town alone 'talking to people'=DEA is pretty Beth's out or just deranged thinking. Can you imagine a single American DEA agent checking into a remote hotel alone?! Sad, all around. These priests and nuns in these small towns that are sincerely trying to help the people, are admirable on so many levels irregardless of any religious ideology
Delete7:37 4 American nuns raped and murdered in El Salvador by US School of the Americas trained soldiers, because of their opposition to US government local wars and their talking in public on the US about it, have been forgotten, they were also robbed of about 7 dollars.
DeleteI bet they were gonna blame it on la linea like always
ReplyDeleteIt feels like the lebarones killings, tomorrow they are gonna say it was Linea, but we all know it was cds in these two cases
DeleteLa linea and los Salazar were in that area. Obradors government knows which group did it, but since bribe money comes in they won't say. They tried to pin it of the labron killings on two farmers.
DeleteThe area it happened in was and still is 100% Paredes turf it was them I think the chaps paid big money to the gov to put the heat on El coma 32 and la linea
DeleteBuggs wrote about how the Lebaron massacre occured in Los Paredes territory in multiple popular articles but even still, there seem to be a decent chunk of BB commenters who think it was Linea or Salazars territory.
Delete@220 Kinda like how you blame it on CDSRL after CJNG commits a crime.
DeleteYup csrl blames cjng a lot too thanks for bringing that up anomanus
Delete307
DeleteIn the beginning of when it happened, it was never mentioned it was : Los Paredes cartel. it was being said La Linea or Salazars cartel. I am not saying Buggs is wrong, I just did not see it mentioned in the beginning . I also remember the goverment was trying to do a cover up and blame the killings on the 2 farmers.
38 of 41 sicarios and bosses were already detained, linked to Juarez Cartel. Talking about Lebaron case.
Delete3:14 🤣🤣🤣 keep believing that shit, mexico is well known for pulling shit like that, plz dont have kids
DeleteI remember the lebron massacre.
DeleteLadies and kids in 2 vans shot up, and then to hide evidence of anything occurred, they torch the vans. A few kids lived to tell the ordeal. AMLO s government handled it badly like always, giving criminals a head start.
8:05 Otherwise Adrian Lebaron would be crying and asking for justice. Grow up little brat.
DeleteCJNG sell stolen hubcaps, sometimes when you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time… you might get capped.
ReplyDeleteParedes and Salazar are the same color
ReplyDeleteThey aren't the same color but I understand if it feels like a seeing eye test, at times.
DeleteI've unified my color coding across all state maps. So, as an example, green is always Sinaloa Cartel, regardless of which state map you are looking at. But this makes states with multiple cartel subgroups really hard to color code because there are a limited number of shades that are easy to differentiate.
I know the paredes people, i think the father is in jail and the son is running AP, they call him Junior. Real bad people. Been to barranca del cobre, nice área. Very sad that there gángsters kill priests. Wish AMLO would draw a like somewhere but he does not seen to care.
DeleteEl junior runs things from Phoenix

DeleteParedes and salazares two diferent clicks but work under the same company. Two narco families with a long history

ReplyDeleteI couldn't find a date on this link but I think it's real interesting it's about el chuyin which we don't know much about. Anybody recall a drug bust in villa ahumada recently or sometime this year?
Thats old its signed by gavino salas and he died in 2013
DeleteIt's old, "Gabino salas" has been dead for years now.
DeleteThank you guys for clearing that up. Who was gabino salas??
Delete11:01 Gambino Salas the late father of panco
DeleteI think he was leader of GN in Juarez
DeleteEl Chuyin was detained by federal gvmnt. while on one of his properties. He had tigers on that property, used to disappear bodies, a former boss of Juarez Cartel. And linked to Lebaron massacre, at least one of his sons was living/studying on El Paso, TEXAS. By the other side Gabino Salas Valenciano / El ingeniero (not gambino) worked for CDS/boss of Gente Nueva, killed by Julian Leizaola in Juarez Valley (controlled by CDS) some years ago.
Delete3:20 that why Leyzaola got his ass shot up in Cd. Juarez?
Delete3:20 No. CDS and Juarez wanted Gabino death. He was the natural enemy from Juarez cartel, and we revealed against his bosses CDS, and it is believed that he was looking to form a new cartel on Valle de Juarez, border with Fabens Texas. By the other side, Leyzaola had a lot of enemies since he received brives from both cartels in juarez... La linea felt betrayed and he cant go back to juarez again, he almost died. Hes now on a wheel chair (unsure if he recovered). However he had political intentions in Tijuana, hes supporting his daughter in her political career, and his other daughter Kenia is wife of Larry Hernandez.
DeleteLots of people on both side of the border were against the idea of designating Mexican cartels "terrorist organizations", as Trump proposed not too long ago. Jurisdiction lines are blurred, like Mr. Mohammed Emwazi found out..
ReplyDeleteThe govt (Trump etc)quickly realized if cartels were classified as true 'terrorists' we would then be obligated to take in refugees fleeing these terrorists, and fleeing the atrocities of these terrorists at the border from not only Mexico but quite a few other places. They and everybody realize(ed) it is much more complicated than initially thought. I too thought 'great, let's classify them as terrorists until I realized the entirety of the shit that it entails.
DeleteThe US gov allows for asylum from violence, not just fleeing from terrorists. Trump and his administration wanted that designation as per the 'War on Terrorism' and Patriot Acts since 2001 it would allow for US military involvement and strikes against cartel members in Mexico.
DeleteMuch like in Italy where it's been said that every family has a family member involved with the mob Mexico is the same way. The entire family might not be involved but at least one person is. Having said this labeling cartel members terrorists would put entire families not dealing with drugs in the eyes of the Americans simply because one memeber of theirs does deal with these. If this is the case Amercicans would reject visas even for innocent people on the sole basis they might be related to a drug dealer. Then if military action is taken plenty innocents could come under cross fire.
DeleteThat designation would be racist as shit for the U.S. government law enforcement agencies know this all too well. The Pentagon on the other hand wouldn't give a fuck who it would hurt so as long as to look good for Trump.
This law blog claims the asylum aspect is a little more complicated:
DeleteThe designation of cartels as foreign terrorist organizations (FTO) would likely have a far more negative impact on the asylum claims of migrants because of their frequent and often coerced interactions with cartels along their journey.
[...]
8 U.S.C. § 1182(a)(3)(B) bans any foreign citizen from entering the United States who is a member of that organization, is formally associated with the organization or who has “engaged in terrorist activity” relating to that organization.
[...]
The statute defines engaging in terrorist activity very broadly, covering people not ordinarily associated with terrorism.
[...]
Many migrants pay smuggling groups for their passage, and those payments could be construed as material support if the groups were controlled by cartels or were cartels themselves. To bar a migrant from entering the U.S., the government must prove only that the person should have reasonably known that their smuggling payment would provide support to a terrorist group.
[..]
If a migrant were kidnapped by a group designated as an FTO and then provided any form of ransom, either a cash payment or services in exchange for their freedom, that payment would render them presumptively ineligible to enter the U.S.
https://www.lawfareblog.com/what-happens-if-trump-administration-designates-drug-cartels-terrorist-organizations
Caravan organizers can be easily found by aspirants, they even get their ticket on credit, some reports say around 7 000 dollars, the US spends trillions of dollars fighting the caravans, imprisoning, prosecuting and defending and housing them...
DeleteIt would be easier and cheaper to give aspirants a credit line to stay in their own country, forget about the coyotes, like real big drug trafficking banksters, no government can find them.
Dont blame illegals... most of the members of cartels operating there are citizens, champ. :)
DeleteThey took the bodies, in order to sell their body organs in the black market.

ReplyDeleteI get it’s not right to kill the priest but anyone think they might have been involved in something they shouldn’t have been? It’s weird how he left one alive?
ReplyDeleteThese priests come from a small town where everybody knows everybody.
DeleteThis means that if these priests were involved in soemthing illegal EVERYBODY would know.
Thes priests were just doing their job trying to protect the guy being chased. The killer is just another cocked up CDS idiot that choose to commit the crime.
CDS is known to kill radio personalities, priests and anyone that talks bad about the narco culture and or defends anyone they are trying to kill.
CDS killed an entire baseball team consisting of people between 80 and 22 years old and a 9 year old girl a few years ago in the Valley of Juarez because the team tried to defend a member of theirs CDS was after.
Learn something about CDS!
