President Andrés Manuel López Obrador affirmed that the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) did not collaborate directly to arrest drug trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero, since the Secretary of the Navy participated in an operation to support the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR).
"The Navy acts in support of the Prosecutor's Office (FGR) to enforce, to execute an arrest warrant, of course, this involved intelligence work as with the purpose that human lives are not lost, it was a job that carried out in the Prosecutor's Office with the support of the Secretary of the Navy, in the case of the participation of the DEA as indicated by the United States ambassador (in Mexico, Ken Salazar) they did not have a direct intervention, "he emphasized.
In the morning conference this Monday, the president lamented the death of 14 sailors who participated in support of the operation that was carried out in the municipality of San Simón (Choix), Sinaloa, and wished the speedy recovery of another who is injured. He said that an investigation is being carried out to find out the causes of the crash of a Black Hawk helicopter.
He said that on another occasion information was requested from the DEA, via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They participated with information, "but it was not carried out."
"The Secretary of the Navy of Mexico carried out the entire investigation in the apprehension of Mr. Caro Quintero," he stressed.
–“Didn't the DEA locate him and tell Marina?” he was questioned.
–“No, and much fewer elements, it is not like before,” he affirmed.
López Obrador said that Ambassador Salazar clarified that the DEA did not participate, as stated by Anne Milgram, Administrator of the US agency.
He explained that two or three Navy helicopters participated in the operation. However, near Los Mochis, one crashed, so the Secretary of the Navy, Rafael Ojeda, ordered an investigation to find out the causes of the accident.
He commented that the black box was sent to the helicopter manufacturer so that the information collected could be delivered to the FGR, which launched an investigation. The president stressed that this Sunday a tribute was made to the 14 sailors who died.

“A tribute was paid to them, I sent them a message, even if they are irreparable losses, we also told them that we are going to support them in everything, more than what is formally established because all of them, all the elements of the armed forces have insurance, but I gave the instruction that another amount be given to the relatives, equal to what they are entitled to by law,” he stressed.
