"Chapitos" Set Alarm Bells Ringing In CDMX: Who Is The Current Leader Of The Sinaloa Cartel?

According to Antonio Nieto, 'Los Chapitos', Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman's sons, arrived in Mexico City in September 2021.

Following the mega-operation in Topilejo, in the Tlalpan district of Mexico City, 14 people were arrested, two of whom claim to be from Sinaloa and, at the time of their capture, were wearing a medal that alludes to the Sinaloa Cartel.

The National Guard decided to reinforce security in the area, as 'Los Chapitos', a criminal group belonging to the Sinaloa Cartel, have set off alarm bells in the south of the Mexican capital.

According to information from journalist Antonio Nieto, 'Los Chapitos', sons of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, arrived in Mexico City in September 2021 and settled in the Coyoacán district.

Upon their arrival, they held several meetings between members of local criminal groups, with the aim of planning the takeover of bars, neighborhoods and strategic roads in the capital.

"In February 2020 there was a meeting between alleged envoys of 'Los Chapitos' and some servers, but it was not until the one that occurred weeks ago (September 2021) in the center of the CDMX," the journalist reported.

In addition, Nieto said that this meeting took place in parallel to the alliance between the "Rorro" gang, the Yayos and the Rodolfos, "to get the Union out of Coyoacán and Benito Juárez.

Who is the leader of 'Los Chapitos'?

As already mentioned, 'Los Chapitos' are the sons of detained drug trafficker Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman and belong to the Sinaloa Cartel, whose leadership of the group is disputed with Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada's team.

El Chapo' -who remains in a US prison- was the one who led his sons, however, now that he is behind bars, it is Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar -known as "The King of Cocaine" or "El Chapito"- who is considered the leader in the drug trafficking business, for this reason, the DEA is offering a 5 million dollar reward to anyone who reveals his whereabouts.

Another person under the U.S. spotlight is Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar - known as "El Alfredillo" - who is also the leader of one of the Sinaloa Cartel's factions along with Ovidio, his half-brother.

Ovidio Guzmán Lopez - known as 'El Ratón' - is another important arm of 'Los Chapitos' and perhaps the best known son of 'El Chapo', as his face appeared all over Mexico and the world in 2019, when national and international media reported the failed operation called "culiacanazo".

Ovidio was arrested and this caused the streets of Culiacán, Sinaloa, to become a war field, so the security authorities decided to release him.

Joaquín Guzmán López is the least known of Chapo's sons, but he is also followed by security authorities for his involvement in criminal activities within the 'Los Chapitos' group. According to the Department of Justice he is also known as 'El Güero', 'Moreno' or 'Güero Moreno', but there are no photos of him.
