Joint US-Mexico Task Force on Fentanyl Trafficking Planned During Biden/AMLO Meeting

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) met with President Biden at the White House.

On July 12 President Biden and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) met at the White House to discuss a plethora of topics from migration to trade and manufacturing and climate change emissions. Drugs, particularly fentanyl, trafficking, and border security were also on the agenda. In a joint statement, the pair confirmed they would see the creation of a new “U.S.-Mexico operational task force to disrupt the flow of fentanyl between their respective countries”.

The rise of fentanyl has had deeply damaging effects, particularly in the US as they face a growing opioid crisis. Last year the US saw a record number of overdose deaths, 107,000, with the majority being the result of a fentanyl overdose. Fentanyl is a particularly strong form of synthetic opioid, which is often within, unknown to consumers, other opioids.

Fentanyl precursors are primarily sent from China, and increasingly India, to Mexico where drug trafficking groups make fentanyl often in clandestine factories. Mexico saw one of the largest fentanyl busts ever last week when over a half-ton of fentanyl was seized in a warehouse in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

The nature and operational action of this fentanyl task force are still unknown. Undoubtedly, the fentanyl crisis is deeply damaging. However, will a doubling down on drug-war rhetoric and action, attempting to dismantle the drug supply chains and criminalize users, be an effective strategy?

Portions of the Official Joint Statement

Through the Bicentennial Framework for Security, Public Health, and Safe Communities, we reaffirmed our commitment to work together to address major security issues affecting our nations, including the challenges of fentanyl, arms trafficking, and human smuggling, and to reduce levels of drug abuse and addiction. We committed to deepening our cooperation to combat transnational criminal organizations that foment violence in both our countries. We reaffirmed the robust operational efforts between law enforcement agencies to address these paramount security efforts. We pledged to establish a U.S.-Mexico operational task force to disrupt the flow of fentanyl into our countries.

The tragic deaths of migrants at the hands of human smugglers in San Antonio further strengthen our determination to go after the multi-billion-dollar criminal smuggling industry preying on migrants and increase our efforts to address the root causes of migration. The Departments of Justice and Homeland Security and Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office have coordinated to arrest and prosecute those who endanger the lives of vulnerable migrants, including through the work of Joint Task Force Alpha and its Mexican partners. This year our countries will celebrate 200 years of formal diplomatic relations. As neighbors, friends, and family, we are united as two nations that share one future.

Lopez Obrador president of Mexico, has been put on the spot on what's going on with fentanyl overdose's.
Since he does not want DEA in Mexico, now he has to get off his high horse and act.

    3. 12:02 dont get it personal... But DEA should focus on their side of the border. Dont see a valid reason to operate outside of their boundaries... Unless the other countries could do the same. Keep trying your best. :)

    4. @1422 hrs.: I’ll take it personally if I choose. Taxpayer money funds those nitwits, and they’re not exactly paragons of virtue.

  3. If the US is given a free rein to do whatever it takes to remove these drug dealing mass murdering scum from the face of the planet then it might just work. But the people of Mexico will need to get behind this and realize that this is their light at the end of the tunnel because right now they are in the last chance saloon. Lets hope its more than just empty words

    2. The us can’t even stop the skinny 18 year olds shooting places up and gangbangers what makes you think they can stop the cartels as a whole?

    3. The U.S was given "free reigns" from 1986-2018 and achieved nothing. If anything drug trafficking increased along with the violence in Mexico. The U.S does nothing but destabilize Latin american nations.

    4. do you have any better ideas than letting US forces(ideally Rangers) come in and wipe them out?

    5. 216 there's more to it than just attacking drug dealing head on. That has been the strategy for how long and there's only been blowback. There was a U.S politician who suggested placing more U.S troops along the southern border instead of sending them to the middle east. That sounds like a great idea if you ask me. You would definitely slow down drug trafficking along with human smuggling. That suggestion didn't sit well with U.S politicians because those that profit from wars would lose a lot of money. So what happened, it was scrapped. Then you have to ask yourself, why are people immigrating to the U.S? Long before mexico lost its grip on the violence people were immigrating for several reason, lack of basic needs like food, medical, jobs or better paying jobs and lack of education. Those issues are still present today on top of drugs and violence. So what does Mexico need to do? Mexican politicians need to provide those services to their citizens and that there would help deter mexicans from becoming involved in criminal activities. It's never gonna go away, but you can definitely lower it. Sending in the U.S military will just destabilize Mexico and create a war, introducing firearms to the people will only create more violence and give easier access to the bad guys.

    1. You mean lazy Lopez Obrador.
He's on the spot light to do some about the Fentanyl coming to the USA, this time simple hugs and kisses on the lips won't work. He did not want the DEA to be in Mexico, so now he has to get his 350 Elite military officers, busting fentanyl labs, now let's see if lazy Obrador will do something.

    2. 1:34 they should make a deal. US stops gun trafficking to the south and Mexico stops fent trafficking to the north.
