Sedena Sent 250 Elements To Zacatecas To Reinforce Security In The State

Given the upsurge in violence that afflicts Zacatecas, the federal government sent 250 elements of the Army in support of the actions of the 11th Military Zone, as announced by the Secretary of National Defense.

Through the Command of the 5th Military Region, Sedena explained that this deployment called "Joint Task Force" seeks to continue contributing to the efforts of the three orders of Government to provide an environment of tranquility, peace and security for the benefit of all the state.

Zacatecas is experiencing an intense wave of violence, mainly generated between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel in their struggle to appropriate the plaza.

On Tuesday, June 28, the State Secretary of Public Security confirmed that elements of the State Police were attacked with gunfire in the municipality of Fresnillo, when they were carrying out patrols, an attack that left three of the aggressors injured, six firearms were seized. 

Days before, on June 24, alleged hit men from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) once again unleashed chaos in Apulco, south of Zacatecas, where they shot at the security detail of the mayor Yanet Morales Huizar, which left some houses shot and burning vehicles on the highway.

According to local reports, the attacks occurred after members of the criminal group located Yanet Morales Huizar, municipal president, while she was doing work in the town of Tenayuca.

The armed subjects were traveling hidden in a yellow dump truck loaded with sand, from this vehicle they shot at the guards of the municipality, who has been constantly threatened by the CJNG. They were also traveling in two trucks and opened fire, unleashing a strong confrontation in which Morales Huizar was unharmed.

Local reports indicate that the attack occurred around 09:00 am, when the mayor was holding a work meeting with the community delegate, and she was surprised by the shooting. Since Yanet Morales Huizar took office as mayor, she has lived under threats from the CJNG. Hence, this is the main group identified by the recent attacks, since they dominate in the vicinity of Jalisco, where they maintain their criminal stronghold.

Apulco does not have municipal police, since the agents resigned due to threats from the CJNG. For this reason federal authorities decided to send National Guard troops, but the last detachment left the municipality three weeks ago and since then there has been no relief.

The Secretary of Public Security of Zacatecas had already indicated to Infobae Mexico that the municipalities without local elements would also be supported with reinforcements from the administration of Governor David Monreal.

It is not the first time that attacks have been recorded by the forces of the CJNG leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, El Mencho, against the mayor of Apulco, her husband was kidnapped so that the municipality wouldn’t fight organized crime. She gave in to the warnings to end the torture of her husband. While in March of this 2022, members of the CJNG were captured when they dismantled surveillance cameras in Apulco.
