Authorities in El Salvador continue their actions against gangs to put an end to extortion of commerce and other sectors of society.
The government announced the seizure of 1,188,374 dollars obtained from criminal activities, more than 1,000 weapons and 500 vehicles from these groups, as a result of the offensive deployed under the State of Exception.
The actions of the military authorities also included the seizure of 543 vehicles, 11,367 cell phones and 241,310 dollars obtained from drug trafficking, mainly cocaine, marijuana, crack and methamphetamines.
These actions are protected by the Territorial Control Plan and within the framework of the exception regime still in force in the country and which was legalized by the National Assembly as a way to face the growing climate of violence and criminality which reached its peak at the end of March of this year.
Government reports indicate that the National Civil Police (PNC) in joint operations with the Armed Forces of El Salvador (FAES) seized 1,283 firearms of different calibers, including 622 pistols, 259 revolvers, 26 machine guns, 211 shotguns and 7 grenades, among others.
In this scenario, the arrest and imprisonment of almost 50,000 alleged gang members and collaborators of these groups labeled by the government as criminals stands out.
According to the Presidential Press Secretariat, the homicide rate decreased in the country after the application of the State of Exception and positive statistics are registered on an increasing number of days with zero homicides.
On the other hand, public transportation and commercial sector businessmen thanked the Government for the results of the Security Plan which resulted in a decrease of criminal typologies such as extortion by 95%, for example, in public transportation.
Meanwhile, and in spite of criticism from affected sectors, the Minister of Defense, Francis Merino Monroy, emphasized that the exception regime will be maintained until the last gang member on the street faces justice.

Bukele has made a big press story lately about building a dedicated gang prison called "terrorism confinement center" that will supposedly have space to properly jail 40,000 inmates with 35 watchtowers will be inescapable outside the cities. He claims it will be ready in two months. I know he has threatened the gangs with integrating them in jail to get leverage and if I remember correctly he said that the new facility would not separate them.

There is already jails where they are housed together. The gangs made a statement about living together peacefully in prison and if anyone starts trouble within the prison that there shot caller of the click will be asked to handle it and if he refuses that there whole click will be wiped out.
DeleteThis question is directed more @ Mr. Sol or possibly Hearst, or another contributor that's not going to give some idiotic answer. I've read and watched a few documentaries that talk that overall El Salvador's president has some deals worked with the leaders of these same gangs being busted. So my question is: would this have any sort of benefit as far as maybe them allowing for some downsizing of the overall gangs. Or is he really doing this because he's this patriotic individual that's really looking to lead when it comes to addressing these groups and making an actual political and patriotic change. Is the only way to really address an issue like this is to declare that state of emergency which is also slightly dangerous because there's a fine line where it can become sone type of dictatorship or something similar.

They will now face justice and be locked up until then when most of them will go to jail. 5 years waiting trial and 15 years in prison and in 20 years some middle aged ex gangsters are released. Their leaders will probably never get out and their gangs will have ceased to exist. Job done

Delete2:27 you are right that we have to look at current successes. But you cant be so naive to believe that the gang will be done for on 20 or even 50 years. Maybe in its current incarnation yes but there will always be gang as long as their is a decline of family values and while poverty persists .

DeleteHe has denied have a deal however I believe he did. There was a violent weekend where the Ms killed dozens of people. Apparently it was due to government not holding up hes part. I am all for making deals with them if it reduces the violence,. Then when the time is rite double cross them which is what seems to have happened.

11:01 I am not suggesting he go there and try find a job that pays $10 a day or even less. I am suggesting that if you are a wasterner and have funds to start a small business that provides you with a means to survive or if you are a retiree and have funds to live on your money will go alot further living there. However if you are thinking of going down there to find a low paying job definitely don't go there.

ReplyDelete8:45 Gangs began with deported citizens that became gang members in US jails before being deported. Once there, they had a LOT of orphans to recruit because of the wars they faced previously in Central America. Specially in El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.
