Local Journalist Fredid Román Gunned Down By Assassins In Chilpancingo, Guerrero

By "El Huaso" for Borderland Beat

This afternoon, local journalist Fredid Román was shot and killed outside his home in the city of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, according to local news reports.

According to La Octava Digital, he was driving near his home in central Chilpancingo when he was gunned down by two assassins on motorbikes around 5:30 p.m. local time.

Neighbors called police after hearing the shots, but when paramedics and officers arrived, Román was dead.

El Universal reported that Fredid Román's son, Vladimir Román, was a chicken seller who was killed on July 1, 2022 in Chilpancingo. Recently, numerous chicken sellers have been killed and threatened by organized crime in this region, as reported by Borderland Beat.

La Octava Digital reported that he was the founder of La Realidad de Guerrero, a Facebook news page with over 9,000 followers that covered local Guerrero news. He is the 15th journalist killed this year. Many of the reporters killed in Mexico are independent or working for small, local news organizations. They do not have the protection and safety of journalists working for larger, high profile outlets, and make easy targets for disgruntled politicians and criminals.

  1. We need to do more to protect these journalists in Mexico if we are going to continue to receive news from Mexico. Without them, Borderlandbeat would not be possible.

    1. Very true - despite all the threats, there are thousands of diligent, brave journalists in Mexico who report on what needs to be reported. Without them, we would be in the dark.

    2. Most known journalists in Chihuahua take a bribe from La Linea. By not saying worst things. Now days the few honest journalist have three paths: Being poor, being killed or being amazingly good and known.

  2. Protect the journalists?! Yeah maybe?! How about the average or poor Mexican citizen? How about them FIRST! How about Mexico get rid of their disgusting and pathetic “gun laws!” How about the average citizen being able to defend themselves or their families? Thanks to the ignorant Mexican gun laws only criminals, cops, and the elites have the ability to defend themselves! Pathetic! Good bless the 2nd amendment. You cowardly killer fucks come get you some in small town USA!

    1. 6:34 You are ignorant. You can own a gun. And never saw how the 2nd amendment to help in something. US is the country of the mass public shooting and you can barely hear about those open carry heroes.... Uvalde massacre is an example (of many).... Is was their perfect opportunity to practice world famous american police brutality, this time with a good cause. Straight your facts.

    2. You sound like one of those long bearded, tattooed, black and gray American flag wearing, MMA half ass practing dudes who are obsessed with guns and the 2nd ammendment. We get it, you own a tricked out AR, you protect the 2nd ammendment. Ya, relajate wey. 🤦🏽‍♂️😶

    4. 6:34 has valid points he is stating how bad the Mexican laws about average citizens should be owning guns. It's true cops, criminals and the elite carry guns, why not the citizens??? Citizens working for a living..get extorted, raped, kidnapped, tortured, but cannot protect themselves with a gun.

    5. 8:08 Suggest you to dont criticize what you dont really know, or understand. The freedom of owning guns (in such way) had solved nothing in the US.... endless public shootings for no reason, and never saw a single open carry hero doing its thing... In Mexico citizens perfectly can own a gun to protect home/family (legally or black market). I own a gun, and most people i know owns a gun to protect home, so, not sure what are you referring to... dont think the american way of selling guns at walmart with a driver license is the way to follow.

  3. I saw a hero church goer blow a shooter with a pump shotgun brains out inside a church after the coward with the shotgun let off on someone else in the church. What exactly is your point?

  5. All Mexicans must be protected. This will only come about by improvements in law enforcement and the judicial system. It's not practical for us as readers to change the whole system. However, we may be able to effect change in only one aspect of the system by standing up for these reporters.
Many of these murders are not investigated or are improperly investigated. We can press Mexican authorities to investigate these crimes properly. We can also push our own elected representatives to press the Mexican state governments to do more. We can also write letters to the editor in various newspapers to raise awareness of this issue. These are small things that we as readers can do.

    1. Endless problem if demand persists, since cartels gain power from an external source, that means endless availability for cash and weapons. Important to think which is the root of the problem.

    2. @Detroit that's nice to day but how to do it?? Are you going to buy every Mexican on earth private security forces from the Mossad???

Your opinion is confusing and unreal

    3. 8:06 Dr. Detroit
You know what happens to activist in Mexico? Government sends in a cartel to make that person disappear.
You know what happens to persons that set up a defense group to stop the cartel, from taking over their town, the cartel that is in cullusion with curupt officials, tells them do something to disarm the autodefensas, government sent in the Army, the leader Mireles gets taken away, in prison 2 years for guns on him. In the meantime they brainwashed him in prison.
In other words a loophole will always be found, for Mexico to continue to be currrupt.

    4. 8:02 You opinion is based on things that happened in 2007... lots of things had changed since. Problem in Mexico is much more complex than "everyone is corrupt". Straight your facts. Dont blame Mexico for the lack of actions in the US, when there is the root of the problem.

    5. There are NO easy answers or easy implementations to 'cure' any of this, so as we sit from the comfort of our stateside homes, let's remember this. All we can do is theorize, hypothesize, and wish Mexico the best. Also, many of the reporters being murdered, frequently the hit is put out BY politicians and law enforcement that are capable of being just as sinister and corrupt than the outright criminal. At least with a Criminal you know what they are, the scumbag politicians and law enforcement hide behind in Alter Ego or a facade

    6. 8:50 You are right, but have to mention than not necessarily are politicians and law enforcement the ones involved. Just to mention one example (of many) El Choco, a known journalist killed- from El Diario de Juarez - was killed by La Linea, and most journalist in Juarez had the same fate, being killed by cartels.

  7. man it's tough to be a journalist in a war zone like mexico where anybody could dime your ass to some bum who wants you dead for a post you made 3 years ago exposing his shit. fucking tough to stay alive in this environment. you have to be literally anonymous to survive, no name, no face, no details. undercover 24/7

    1. Mexico is not a war zone. This is normal life. It is a conflict between citizens of the same country not a war at all.

    2. 10:23 When I saw the shooting in Uvalde where kids were killed for no reason and police did nothing, i thought that was worse than a war zone.

    3. 9:59 You are leaving out key points.
Mentally unstable Latino, aquired assault rifle, when he turned 18.
The government did not make him do it, he went to shoot up a classroom of elementary students.
The police were ready, some got there 3 after a 911 call. The school police chief Aredondo, which is in charge told police to stand by , they followed orders all the while kids were getting killed in the room. After 55 minutes the US Border patrol, went in over writing Chief Aredondo order. More liveswould have been saved, Thanks to the chef he should be fired.

    4. 10:29 I saw nothing than an another american doing what is being done since Columbine, regardless on color of skin, he still an american born and raised, and apparently followed the tradition... The government didnt intervened on time, there are videos and parents of victims supporting that. Wheres that police brutality when needed? or this time they felt a huge need to follow orders ignoring the kids lives. Cowards. With unarmed people on traffic stops they tend to see nonexistent weapons and act accordingly...
