Tuzantla, Michoacán: The Municipality Where La Familia Michoacana Sowed Terror, Only Has 35 Police Officers

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

According to these figures, there is a rate of 2 police officers per thousand inhabitants, which leaves the population practically defenseless against drug cartels.

In February 2019, five elements of the corporation were abducted and executed by organized crime.
A confrontation between two cells of the La Familia Michoacana cartel left eight assassins dead and generated panic among the population of the municipality of Tuzantla, in Michoacán.

And in broad daylight, groups of heavily armed gunmen were seen walking through the streets of that town, as revealed by some videos broadcast through social networks.

The reason why the criminals turned Tuzantla into their battlefield is because that population of around 18,000 inhabitants only has 35 police officers.

This was revealed by the mayor, Arturo Serrato Suárez, when giving an interview for Radio Formula, in which he referred to the recent confrontation between assassins of La Familia Michoacana.

Confrontation with high-powered weapons between groups of armed civilians in the center of Tuzantla, Michoacán, leaves a preliminary balance of at least eight people dead. Authorities of the three orders of government are already in place.

In this regard, the municipal president mentioned that the first reports of attacks occurred at 1:00 p.m., however, since they have few police elements, they could not respond immediately and it took about two hours to arrive.

"I don't have the presence of the Army or the National Guard, I only have 35 municipal police officers, they are very few, since we are 18,000 inhabitants in the population," he said.

It is for this reason that Serrato Suárez has already made a request to the federal government to install a National Guard or Army base. "Don't leave us alone, we want you to accompany us and help us with that," he added.

Finally, he commented that there are people who have begun to defend themselves against these attacks, which is causing great concern among the state government, because the priority is to maintain order and prevent the population from putting themselves at risk.

8 people were killed in the clashes in Tuzantla, Michoacán, including 3 minors. Johnny Hurtado, better known as "El Pez", sent assassins to attack his rivals. After the attacks, this is how security was reinforced in the municipality

According to these figures, Tuzantla has a rate of 2 police officers per thousand inhabitants, which exceeds by two tenths the minimum standard recommended by the UN, which is 1.8, which didn’t prevent the confrontation between two rival criminal cells from taking place.

It should be noted that the municipal police of Tuzantla have always been in a vulnerable situation, as happened in February 2019, when five elements of the corporation were kidnapped and executed by organized crime.

At that time there were only 11 municipal police officers in total, so the state government assigned another 19 and then another five were added.
