Zacatecas: Armed Confrontation Between Military And Hitmen

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

A corporal from the Mexican Army died and another soldier was seriously injured after participating in a confrontation against alleged members of organized crime in the municipality of Apulco.

The scuffle arose when the soldiers, attached to the seventh regiment of the Motorized Infantry Group, arrived at the intersection of interstate highway 206, near the access to the municipal seat; They came to investigate a complaint that armed individuals were transporting several bodies in a vehicle.

Upon arriving at the scene, the soldiers were attacked by civilians who set up an ambush for them, and although they repelled the attack, two of them were injured. Before they could be transferred to a hospital, one of them died; the other was transferred, with the support of a helicopter, to a hospital.

Until Thursday afternoon, the Ministry of National Defense had not released the names of the victims of the attack, for security reasons.

On the other hand, in the city of Fresnillo, Refugio García Muñoz, a state road and transit policeman, assigned to the C-4 system, of the video surveillance system of the State Secretariat of Public Security, was shot dead in that town.

Meanwhile, in the community of Ermita de Guadalupe, south of the city of Jerez, the bodies of three men were found, who earlier this week were abducted in Fresnillo.

In addition, the body of an individual was abandoned in the municipal dump of Ciudad Cuauhtémoc; while in the city of Guadalupe, the owner of a body shop and automotive painting was shot.

This Thursday morning, at the headquarters of the 11th military zone, the Morenista governor David Monreal Ávila led the destruction of 400 long and short weapons, which the Sedena and the state police have seized in recent months.

In Fresnillo, Mayor Saúl Monreal Ávila attended a property of the Attorney General's Office to witness, together with state and federal authorities, the burning of 282 kilograms of narcotics, which were seized in this municipality during the current year.

  2. My heart bleeds for the Mexican folks, I'm a Serbian reading this site, among others, for 5+ years ( you have to be somewhat informed what's happening in the epicentres such are MX, COL,VE,BRA), and the similarities between our two nations ( no matter what country we live in) are astonishing!
The family ties, reaching to the extended family, the machismo, and dislike of the geys, the accordion and trumpet, hearty and spicy food ( beens and corn saved us from anihilation many of times), the fiestas, passion crimes, and family vendetta, even smuggling drugs, it's unbelievably similar, the difference is Mexico is big and neighbor of the sheep in the wolves close, we do our business further in EU .
The future is not bright for both of our countries since our Governments do not decide anything, or are corrupted to the bone, but everything passes, and this shel pass, and sadly, we'll be long dead by then

Thank you for writing from Serbia. The situation in Mexico is serious. Homicides are up by more than 50% since this president took office. The murder of journalists has more than doubled since he took office.
Mexico's current president is a leftists. As a general rule when leftists are elected as a leader of a country, crime has a tendency to rise.
Part of the problem with the murder of journalists is that this president chooses to harangue and disparage journalists who do not agree with his views. This president's rhetoric against journalists sends the message that journalists can be killed with impunity. This has endangered the lives of all mainstream journalists and led to a record number of attacks on journalists with deadly consequences.
Most crime in most countries is handled by local law enforcement. It is local law enforcement that has the greatest impact on crime in any region.
The increase in murders is not happening in all states. In a few states murders have decreased since this president took office. This is because these states have been professionalizing their police forces leading to their police being more effective at reducing violence. As more states improve the capacity of their police forces, homicides will continue to fall (they have decreased 3% overall between 2020 and 2021). And the murder of journalists will fall as a part of the broader reduction in crime.
It will not be decades before homicides are significantly reduced in Mexico. I believe that homicides will be less than a third of what they are today by 2030 after a majority of local police forces will be able to contain the violence in their areas.
Don't count Mexico out. Mexico will improve in the coming years. You will be able, and should, visit Mexico once this violence subsides.
I know Serbia is going through trying times. I wish you the best and hope that you have a peaceful and prosperous future.

  4. If an armed mafia such as one of these cartels was even able to organize in the USA like those in Mexico and they attacked the cops the response would be 9/11 big! It would never get that far! Mexican cartels vs USA Italian mafia? Well, obviously the amount of money, murders, savagery, firepower and disregard for the lives of innocents the Mexican cartels dominate in all those areas! Cunning, (till the 1980’s) omertà, rackets, evading USA federal law enforcement, strict codified families, respect for the structure, and operating in USA without getting caught goes to the USA Italian mafia before the 1980’s. Could the Mexican cartels operate in USA the way they do in Mexico? Of course not! But, the question remains, the amount of drugs from Mexico being sold in every place in USA begs the question, who are the main operators in USA to facilitate the bosses power in Mexico? The amount of federal indictments during each year do not even put a dent in the cartels capacity to traffic in USA! The cartels usa operators are obviously the linchpin to their success! Yeah there are many federal trafficking indictments yearly involving Mexican cartel operators based in USA. But, not even close to the amount of operators there actually are. The veteran USA operator is obviously a very skilled criminal who most likely lives/hides in plain sight! It is very hard to believe that the various alphabet soup agencies of the USA do not know who they are! Corrupt just like Mexico but in a much different and I would say more diabolical way. There is no answer and it’ll never end unless the drones, seals, delta, and small strike forces are unleashed upon Mexican soil with or without permission of Mexican elites!

Mexico will change after they provide more resources and training to their police forces. Remember, it took the U.S. decades to reign in these various mafia families and the U.S. wasn't facing the extraordinary violence that Mexico is now enduring. Crime can never be extinguished, but it can be controlled.
Change is slowly happening. Some Mexican governors, mayors, police commanders and other politicians are in U.S. prisons. Mexico is catching on and successfully prosecuting corrupt politicians and police. Change in Mexico is slow, but it is occurring. Your average Juan Doe is waking up and electing and pressuring their government for change. Everyone in Mexico is tired of the violence. They are protesting, taking up arms in their defense and most importantly changing who and what parties they are voting for. With Fox, they elected their first non-PRI president. They elected MORENA in 2018. If ELMO doesn't deliver, they will go for another party. Mexican votes are truly up for grabs. It's only a matter of time until Mexico sees a leader like Gorbachev who truly understands the situation and puts the good of the Mexican people above his own interests.
Your comment is understood and appreciated. It is undeniable that the U.S. military can straighten out the situation in Mexico in short order, but there is no political will in the U.S. to send U.S. troops into Mexico. Sending U.S. troops into Mexico is simply not a viable political option. Mexicans will have to suffer until they elect a leader who can truly make the changes that need to be made.

    1. 8:02 as soon as US Law enforcement discovered the Cosa Nostra earned soo many billions of dollars, they decided to take them down and turn gambling and vice into "industries" that helped them take it all over and thrive, one example is the Teamster's Union now populated by Cops and their own favorite select gangsters that handle the business side for their criminal cop compas in cahoots with City Hall... drug trafficking belongs to them too.
