The Phoenix Police Department said it made its largest fentanyl bust ever this week when officers seized about 1 million pills containing the powerful synthetic opioid.
Most of pills seized are blue and designed to resemble prescription oxycodone, Sgt. Brian Bower told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday. There were too many to count, so police used weight to estimate the amount.
“That matrix came out with it just under 1 million pills,” Bower said.
Francisco Delgado, 26, and Jose Molina Quinonez, 21, were booked into Maricopa County Jail on multiple felony counts after the drugs were found in an Avondale home, police said.
“What really led up to this … massive historic seizure was the fact that we had our detectives with the Drug Enforcement Bureau doing excellent work looking for small-time dealers and it leads to the bigger dealers,” Bower said.
Detectives investigating the sale of narcotics gathered evidence to obtain a search warrant on the home near Avondale Boulevard and Durango Street and one of the suspect’s vehicles, police said.
Phoenix Police Department’s Special Assignments Unit executed the warrants Wednesday and found the stash of pills.
These two should get the death penalty to set an example.

ReplyDeleteMy understanding of these pills is that they don't necessarily kill everyone per se. But more so it comes down to a person's tolerance for them. Much in the same manner a novice would start off with their first drink. At the beginning that drunken state kicks in right away. But with the progression of time so does that conditioning within us to bear more. Either way I sincerely understand the public concern on this matter. And why no one should bother risking it. Especially kids.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who has worked in drug treatment for years, I can say that the kill rate is close to 100% when it's pure fentanyl, the tolerance is usually when the fent is watered down or "cut" and even then you're literally teasing death.

DeleteNot everyone dies yes and I’m sure most of the doses are “normal“ at this point for these pills but the thing that makes fentanyl so bad is the fact that it qualitatively has more respiratory depression in equipotent dosages than is typical for opioids at those levels of intoxication. That paired with less euphoria in equipotent dosages as well so people take more to try to get the same euphoria as traditional opioids but they die quicker because fentanyl is more prone to respiratory depression and the slowing of breathing even in normal doses.
DeleteSo with heroin or oxy you may have a respiratory depression/euphoria ratio of like; 3/10 but with fentanyl it’s like 5/8. The therapeutic index for fentanyl is so freakishly small and the recreational use index is even narrower.

1) improper preparation of the product. With drugs as potent as fentanyl, you need to use a process called wet granulation to dilute it. This process involves dissolving the fentanyl in a solution, entropy ensures the molecules are evenly dispersed through the solution. You then add this solution to X amount of filler powder, drop by drop, constantly mixing the powder until theres a uniform amount of moisture throughout it. You then dry this completely then mill it to a very fine powder. Add excipients necessary for tablet compression and then press the tablets. You cannot reliably dry cut fentanyl powder into a filler agent, it MUST bedo e via wet gtanulation to ensure even molecular distribution. Cutting it powder to powder is a recipe for “hot spots” where one pill might contain 5x the dosage as another, in that case its russian roulette for the user.
2) tolerance. Fentanyl in particular creates tolerance extremely quickly owing to its highly selective mu-type opiod receptor agonist function. Other traditional opiates are nowhere near as mu-type selective as fentanyl is, as such tolerance builds much more rapidly to fentanyl verse other opiates. This is a double edged sword though, fentanyl tolerance also drops much faster when you abstain from use. The result can be one day you need 3 pills to get high, then you abstain (maybe lack of budget) for a day and your tolerance drops (unknowingly). The next time you score you take 3 pills again only due to your drop in tolerance that 3 pills is now fatal. This roller coaster tolerance of fentanyl is much more extreme than other opiates.
While issue #1 is controllable, issue #2 requires a user to “test” their tolerance everytime they take any time offusing fentanyl. Since fentanyl has a duration of about an hour, even just half aday of not using can cause considerable drops in tolerance.
