Bochil, Chiapas: 57 High School Students Accidentally Ingest Cocaine Laced Food

At least 57 students from the "Juana de Asbaje" high school, located in the municipality of Bochil, Chiapas, were hospitalized on October 7, 2022, after being intoxicated with cocaine, which they allegedly consumed with the food served in the cafeteria of that educational institution.

The minors convulsed, vomited, went into shock and some went into a coma. In a video captured when the students arrived at the Rural Hospital of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), it is observed that parents and health personnel run with the students in their arms to take them to the emergency room.

Parents are desperate for news about the health of their children. "Make room! Right now they’re going to tell them the names," one hears an employee say. Shortly after, a mother cries when she recognizes her daughter among the victims. Later, some of those affected had a urinalysis test done in the laboratory and the result tested positive for cocaine.

In a statement, the IMSS representatives in Chiapas, pointed out that 57 adolescents are being treated, who arrived with symptoms of intoxication. At 11:30 p.m. on Friday, October 7, the Federal Government detailed that 56 individuals were in stable condition and one student was reported to be in critical care, who was transferred to the General Zone Hospital (HGZ) No. 2, in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, better known as "Cinco de Mayo".

For its part, the Bochil City Council reported that the corresponding investigations are carried out by the Attorney General's Office (FGE), which is investigating the liquids, food and a cake that the students ingested in the high school cafeteria.

"So far we don’t have any accurate data. However, as a municipal administration we have co-said with the educational authorities and parents from the first calls for help, we have focused on the health of the adolescents. We’re providing full support to the IMSS, and the parents of the children admitted to this health institute," said the City Council, in a statement.

"We’d also like to clarify to the citizens that we are outraged by these facts. We’re working strongly with the Attorney General's Office so that the investigations are carried out immediately and within the legal framework and thus clarify the facts," added the Municipal Presidency of Bochil.
