Oxxo Burned By Armed Men After Police Operation In Leon, Guanajuato

By "El Huaso" for Borderland Beat

Two men burned an Oxxo corner store last night in the Las Joyas neighborhood of Leon, Guanajuato, according to local news site AM Noticias. The attack was a retaliation in response to a police operation nearby.

Video from David Saucedo.

The two men, dressed in black and armed with pistols, entered the store at 7:40 p.m., threatening customers and workers. They spread gasoline and set fire to the store before fleeing. The employees suffered light burns and smoke inhalation, but were rescued by onlookers.

Leon Mayor Alejandra Gutiérrez reported on her twitter account that the fire was extinguished by firefighters and police increased patrols for the night.

There is no accompanying message from the criminal group responsible, but several news sources are reporting that it was a response to a police operation nearby. The source for this may be the mayor's tweet, which says that "the burning of an Oxxo tonight in Joyas de Castilla will not stop the work of police".

Translation: The burining of an Oxxo tonight in Joyas de Castilla is not going to inhibit the work of the Police. Since we were alerted, I ordered that the patrol be intensified; Fortunately, there are no injuries and we are in coordination with the Prosecutor's Office to find those responsible.

Since August, at least 26 Oxxo stores have been burned in the state of Guanajuato by criminal groups. While targeted attacks against one particular type of business or brand are often linked to extortion, it is unlikely that this is the case here.

About 25 Oxxos were torched in early August as a CJNG response after the government attempted to capture a high ranking leader, as reported by Borderland Beat. They were targeted likely because of their abundance in many Mexican cities, not because of any ties with crime.

A little over a month later, in late September, several Oxxo stores in the city of Irapuato closed after receiving threats which seemed to indicate that they were targeted for being aligned with a criminal group, as reported by Borderland Beat. Despite the threats, no attacks materialized.

    9. @309: FEMSA operates the largest independent Coca-Cola bottling group in the world and the largest convenience store chain in Mexico. It is also the second largest shareholder of Heineken N.V.....FEMSA has been listed on the Mexican Stock Exchange since 1978 and on the NYSE through ADRs since 1998. It is a constituent of the IPC, the main benchmark index of the Mexican Stock Exchange, and of the S&P Latin America 40, which includes leading, blue chip companies from Latin America. ...

    2. OXXO does not pay any extortion fees. That was mostly for smaller/local businesses. The other thing is that they have an oxxo every 100 meters... no fucks given.

    3. Is OXXO still owned by Pemex or did it privatize? Punishing the federal government for municipal police action? Or just like seeing OXXOs burn.

  4. FYI: Cervecería Modelo is NOT Mexican owned, the owners sold out years back. They may have some positions but follow the orders by the real owners AB InBev

  5. 04:37 so check it, Cervecería Modelo & Corona in the USA are AB InBev, but not in Mexico. There is still a Mexican owned brewery that sells in Mexico and seperate operations for the exports to USA.

    1. Nope. The owners of Cervecería Modelo sold out many years ago, 2012 according to REUTERS. They got a lot of money for it.
In the USA Constellation Brands distributes Modelos beers they make in two breweries in Mexico and that arrangement has continued even if AB InBev is the owner and distributor worldwide. This was a DOJ anti trust decision AB InBev had to accept to complete the purchase of Cervecería MODELO.
Obviously Modelo and their other brands must continue to be made in México if it's to retain any market value and sales.

  6. Update: Local news reports that this Oxxo was burned in response to the capture of Víctor Alfonso, a local drug distributor.
