"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat
Witnesses report that men attacked the helicopter in which the state Security Secretary, Porfirio Sánchez Mendoza, was traveling.
Testimonies gathered in Aguascalientes state that, before crashing, the helicopter in which the Secretary of Security, Porfirio Sanchez Mendoza, was traveling was attacked with long weapons by individuals on motorcycles.
According to witnesses who gave their statements to El Heraldo de México, the alleged attack on the helicopter began in the community of San Antonio de los Horcones, where subjects on up to seven motorcycles began chasing the aircraft and shooting at it from the ground.
After realizing that the helicopter's propellers had been hit, the attackers headed for the municipality of Jesús María.
According to witnesses, the helicopter tried to avoid the fire, but was unsuccessful.
According to the governor of Aguascalientes, Teresa Jiménez, the aircraft reportedly went down after participating in a surveillance operation.
"Everything indicates that it was an accident," said the governor at a press conference.
Due to the helicopter crash, five people lost their lives: the state secretary of Security, Porfirio Sánchez Mendoza, the pilot of the aircraft, Olegario Andrade, Captain Víctor Manuel Sánchez, the gunners Juan Humberto Rincón and Alejandro Serafín Guerrero.

Delete@Sol; it’s possible that guys on motos got a lucky rotor shot but terribly unlikely even if chopper was static when initially encountered. Shooting an aerial target (especially in motion) is hard with a weapon stabilized on a tripod or other barricading rest - much less shooting from a motorcycle.

ReplyDeleteNot necessarily true sir. Every helicopter's weak spot is its rotor. In a coordinated attack everyone directs their line of fire there. If this is what actually happened then the pilot is at fault for flying too low.

Delete@10:51. The Somali gunmen who brought down the Blackhawk Down choppers targeted the tail rotors. Without a tail rotor to counter the torque of the main rotor, the aircraft goes into an uncontrollable spin and crashes.
