Hidden Armored Bunker Discovered Next to Captured Mafia Boss Matteo Messina Denaro's Apartment

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

Police searched nearby houses after raiding his apartment, discovering a hidden bunker.

A second hideout used by Italy's most wanted mobster Matteo Messina Denaro has been discovered at the back of a closet with a sliding base. The newly-discovered armored bunker is in an apartment about 330 yards from the Mafia boss's primary hideout in the town of Campobello di Mazara, Sicily.

It was long suspected that he could be hiding inside of an isolated bunker at times, like other fugitive Mafiosi, especially 'Ndrangheta leaders in Calabria, have in the past. The fact he was living in plain sight, under an assumed name surprised many.

The house, located in Via Maggiore Toselli, allegedly belongs to a man who was previously tried for mafia association and acquitted in 2001. The hidden escape bunker was meant as a hideout should police discover his apartment and attempt to arrest him. He did not plan for them to capture him at the clinic where he received chemotherapy treatments.

Police found no weapons in the first hideout, according to initial reports, but did discover luxury perfumes, expensive furniture, and designer clothes. He was living in an unassuming house in Campobello di Mazara, 116km (72 miles) from Palermo and just 8km from his birthplace of Castelvetrano.

His alias, Andrea Bonafede, aroused the suspicion of police when they realized it was the name of deceased Mafia boss Leonardo Bonafede's nephew. Phone mapping showed the real Bonafede's cellphone was not in Palermo in 2020 and 2021 when a man using that name had surgery in the city.

Many had assumed Monday's arrest was the result of a tip-off by Messina Denaro's associates, who decided the ailing boss was no longer useful to them.

Police dismissed the theory of a tip-off. Instead, they said they combined old-school investigative methods with modern technology to narrow down their suspects. They also had been targeting his collaborators, family members, and network of companies to weaken his protection and ability to remain hidden.

Denaro is "seriously ill", a doctor at the health clinic said. "He is seriously ill. The disease has accelerated in recent months," Vittorio Gebbia, head of the oncology department at La Maddalena clinic in Palermo stated.

He was heading to a cafe outside of the clinic noticing police were surrounding the area. When a policeman approached and asked him his name. He did not lie.

"You know who I am. I am Matteo Messina Denaro." he said.

Denaro was not present for his first court hearing, which was scheduled to take place via video conference from the prison where he is being held. This was due to his receiving his first chemo treatment behind bars. The hearing has been postponed until March 9.

  1. At least he had enough sense to know the gig was up. He didn’t try to bribe or extort his way out. Maybe he turned over a new leaf.

    1. Hiding in fear in a shitty little apartment and a spider hole bunker for 30 years. Well, at least he had a stolen Rolex to watch his sentence go past. Too funny!

    2. I guess the cancer treatment cut off his balls, as he didn't even fire a single shot when the police came knocking.

    3. The other big Italian mafioso who was just arrested in Dubai was broke. He had to get a front on some coke to survive before being busted, literally crying and singing his guts out.

  5. Dude is a complete and total piece of shit. Kidnapped and tortured a rivals 11 year old son for 3 years before finally strangling him to death. I hope he suffers unimaginable pain every second he is left on this earth. Rest in Piss, bitch.

    3. Denaro's nickname is Diabolik. Named after an Italian comic book character. Besides strangling a 12 year old rivals son, he also strangled a rival's girl who was 3 months pregnant.

A neat and strange little factoid about EL Diabolik is that he is an ardent video game player. I guess there isn't much else to do but play games while on the run.

    4. No he did not kill a boy. He was involved in kidnaping. They did torture the boy. But Salvatore Brusca killed him as his father was brusca soldier and it was personal. Matteo had nothing to do with that killing

He did strangle a pregnat woman. That is truth

      Delete
    5. @12:54 — is correct; go look at how many mafiosi were blamed for the boy’s murder. In the end, it was Riina who ordered it and Brusca who carried it out..

  6. Guys you are wrong. Matteo was not hiding in bunker. You have bunker and underground hideouts if politic climate changes and you have to endur couple of months. He had active social life. Was fan of football club Palerni. Liked golf. And had billions. Just read abouthis business in energy. 2 billions siezed in 2010.

Thid is all a show.he was sick. Not a chanve to survive.

  7. Its all for show. Matteo was sick and his time as boss has come to an end. This was arranged with government . They start with a big win, and new boss comes in.

You do not understand time in mafia. Mafia in sicilia left business of drugs , they are big in energy, supermarkets, wholesale of food, big business in construction, and tourism .

Matteo was a wonder business man, changing whole game, getting mafia in energy business, in multi billion dollar solar business in Italy, as well as in construction of supermarkets and wholesale of foods , hotels, etc. His bread and butter was energy business , green deal, he was big in solars, in 2010 government siezed over 1.5 billion euros, and 500 million dollars of investments in solar energy plants.

    2. He is not my hero, im just saying how it is.

First he did not kill a child. Salvatore Brusca killed a child, it was personal, and father of a child hit Brusca at court, its all known. Matteo Messina Denaro did not kill a child.

  8. Who is Matteo Messina Denaro? He was born in mafia family in clan Corleonesi from Corleone, he was involved in illicit business since childhood, and his first killing was with 16 years to be inducted in family. In his 20s in 1980s he became one of main killers of clan that waged war against Santa Maria di Gesu family and Salvatore Bondato. After the win in war of 80s Riina became Boss of all bosses (there is a great show about events Ill capo dei capi, where close to truth). He became number 2 in Riina structure and since 1993 he was leading mafia as main and most powerful boss.

He did not kill a child it was Salvatore Brusca ,he allowed it because it was informant son, Brusca soldier.

Matteo in his latter years was pure business man that steered the clan in energy business which was bread and butter of the clan, making billions from wind and solar energy farms. Green deal made billions for mafia clan in Sicily.

    1. Green deal made billions for the government after seizing assets from the loser and his clan. There I fixed it for you.

    2. Government sized small portion, like always, since 2000s assets sized are about 4 billion, but its small portion.

His personal money launderer lost 750 million euros in 2010 and fleet of supercars. Its not whole story. In this game you count on couple of billions sized.

Mafia is in good health in Sicily and money is flowing pretty good.

    3. He was Francesco Messina Denaro’s son; from Trapani, not Corleone…

    4. Born in to mafia family Corleonese from Corleone. He and his family are from trapani

      Delete
    5. Wrong he is not a corleonese. He is the boss of the castelveltrano clan.

      Delete
    6. Not only are your wrong about his affiliation. Castelvetrano not corleonese. But this man brags about how he can fill a cemetery with his victims. He is a killer. He ordered the death of children. The man is a piece of dog shit.

      Delete
    7. There is no Castelvetrano clan. He is Corleonese. He was second to toto riina. After his arrest he took over. Corleonese is only clan after war of 80s. There is no Castelvetrano clan

      Delete
    8. He was born in Castelvetrano, his father was the leader of that clan. Toto Riina began to killed the heads of all of the clans that were rivals (and some allies) of the Corleone clan...he spared Messina Denaro's father and Matteo worked for Riina. The Corleonesi (as the clan under Riina that included non Corleone based mafiosi is called) became the controlling force of the Mafia and Denaro was seen as the eventual successor to Riina after Provenzano and Lo Piccolo.

      Delete
    9. Lo Piccolo was never leader of mafia, capo, he was best explained leader of part of his family. He had trouble with Nicci in late 2000s, those people are not in upper level of Mafia.

Denaro was always above Lo Piccolo and even Provenzano as a number 2 of Riina.

In the end of 80s all families where under single command that of Corleone, before that you had couple of families that operated most powerful Santa Maria di Gesu of Stefano Bondate from Palermo.

    10. To geniuses that come in here trying to correct shit they dont know about. Messina Denaro is the boss of the castelvetrano mafia clan. He became boss when his dad passed away and he inherited his father position. He is an ally of the corleonese but not a member of the corleonese clan.

      Delete
    11. @2.20 So Denaro was a ''pure businessman'' who led the way with environmental progress and green energy!! When somebody mugs a grandmother they are not ''pioneering the advancement of care for the elderly''. The mafia got their tentacles wrapped around the new wave of Government money being invested in green energy- it was just as corrupt and parasitic as always.

      Delete
    12. To genius who does not know shit. Castelvetrano clan does not exist. You can say Matteo came from Trapani to take over cupola, or command. He is not regional boss. BUT CAPO DEI TUTTI CAPI. BOSS OF ALL CLANS, ALL FAMILIES CONNECTED TO CORLEONE/SICILIAN MAFIA/COSA NOSTRA SINCE 1980s there is no more clans . Cosa Nostra is not Ndrangheta. Get your facts straight.

I can take you to history. In 1970 you had comission consisted of most powerful mafia clans of Sicily , concentration of power was in Palermo with Inzerillo and Bondate. Corleone clan was small nobody gave them sit at the table. Riina after ending first war of mafia got a sit at comission. Since 1981 and killing of Bondate comission was disbanded and war broke out. Francesco Messina (father of Matteo) and at that time young Matteo accepted the offer and became part of Corleone clan. WHOLE FUCKING TRUTH. AFTER ARREST OF RIINA IN 1993 PROVENZANO AND MATTEO AS NOW 2 IN COMMAND OF RIINA STRUCTURE TOOK OVER THE WHOLE FUCKING THING.

  9. I recommend a show called Gomorra. Real good! Watch it in Italian and read the subtitles. More authentic if you ask me!

    1. @5.11 YES!! I always wanted a show with the tone of Gomorra, and the realism, but centred on Mexican drug trafficking organisations. Its set in Naples, so it could be set in, say, Sinaloa, when Chapo and Arturo Beltran are beginning to distrust eachother. I've been longing for a dark, realistic, intelligent, subtle show about Mexico. Respect dude!

    2. Watch Zero Zero Zero...its from the same author/writer and director etc as Gomorrah. Very similar style and covers a Mexican cartel, 'Ndrangheta family and cocaine brokers. Really great show.

    3. Best show to see Cosa Nostra is Il Capo dei Capi it deals with Riina and his path from Corleone to head of mafia and arrest.
