Despite having a lot of national media coverage, only 56% of people surveyed knew that Garcia Luna is on trial in the United States.
Genaro García Luna, former Secretary of Public Security during the six-year term of Felipe Calderón, has been facing trial in the United States since mid-January for allegedly accepting bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel to facilitate drug trafficking, in addition to charges of organized crime and lying to U.S. authorities.
During part of the trial, his closeness to former President Felipe Calderón has been under the spotlight, as occurred with the testimony of the former prosecutor of Nayarit, Édgar Veitya, who linked him to the protection of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán.
The newspaper El País published on Monday a survey which indicates that 84% of Mexicans believe that Calderón should be investigated for links to drug trafficking.
The survey was carried out by the Enkoll company to 1,223 women and men over 18 years of age throughout the country, in person, between February 4 and 7.
Despite extensive national media coverage, only 56% of those surveyed know that García Luna is on trial. And while not all people know about the trial, 54% of those polled believe the accusations against him are "solid and credible."
The ex-official's defense has pointed out that most of the witnesses used by the U.S. prosecution are criminals who have been convicted of drug trafficking and organized crime.
When asked about this, 50% of those surveyed said that if they were part of the jury they would have little or no confidence in these witnesses, while 4% said they would believe them a lot or somewhat and only 5% did not know how to answer.
Finally, the study asked: "Supposing the trial against Genaro García Luna were to take place in Mexico, do you think it would be fairer or more unfair than in the United States? Fifty-six percent responded that it would be more unfair, 32% more fair and only 12% did not respond.
The other 14% are complicit with him, and say no investigation! Lol
