CBP Agents in San Diego & Calexico Seize Narcotics Including Over 2.5 Tons of Meth in Two Radish Shipments

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers seized a narcotics shipment concealed within pallets of radishes, at the Calexico Port of Entry in Calexico, California on January 31. A week prior,     was seized from another shipment of radishes at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego, California.

4,563 Pound Meth Seizure in Calexico

On Jan. 31, at approximately 7:15 p.m., CBP officers encountered a 24-year-old male driver of a tractor-trailer, with a shipment manifested for radishes. During the initial inspection, a CBP officer referred the driver and tractor-trailer for further examination.

At the inspection area, a non-intrusive inspection was conducted of the tractor-trailer. A CBP K-9 was dispatched to screen the shipment, and the dog alerted CBP officers to the presence of narcotics.

During the inspection, CBP officers discovered and extracted a total of 1,590 packages concealed within the shipment of radishes. The narcotics were tested and identified as methamphetamine with an approximate weight of 4,563 pounds, and an estimated street value of $5,475,600.

“Outstanding work by our CBP officers,” said Roque Caza, Port Director for Calexico Port of Entry. “These smuggling attempts are efforts to deceive and misguide us; however, our officers and law enforcement partners are always working together to improve the safety of our communities.”

The driver, a Mexican citizen, was detained for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt.  CBP officers turned the driver over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further disposition. CBP officers seized the tractor, trailer, and narcotics.

Otay Mesa Cargo Facility CBP officers seized narcotics from a radish shipment on Jan. 29, 2023.

San Diego Seizure

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said officers assigned to the Otay Mesa Cargo Facility uncovered a large amount of narcotics within a shipment of radishes on Sunday.

A 23-year-old man from Mexico was driving a tractor-trailer around 1:12 p.m. when CBP officers referred him, along with the vehicle, for further inspection. During the check, officials say a K-9 alerted officers to the presence of narcotics.

At that time, officers discovered drugs concealed within pallets of radishes. The man was detained for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt, CBP said.

“Perseverance, that is the key principle for success,” said Rosa Hernandez, Otay Mesa Port
Director. “Our CBP officers are the prime example of applying this practice because, as we all
know, things are not always what they seem.”

Officers turned the driver over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further disposition. CBP officers seized the tractor, trailer, and narcotics. Officials did not disclose how much street value the seizure amounted to but noted it was a “large” amount of narcotics.

    1. Like they can make and risk that kind of load. That’s CDS’s loss on the back of Sinaloan produce.

    2. 1:14 Idk, at this axis point it could be either one. I’m sure CJNG with all their super labs can pull this off.

    3. 4:51 Maybe but I believe CJNGs primary business pursuits are 1) piso - extortion, 2) kidnapping, 3) micro-trafficking.
Has there been any super lab busts attributes to CJNG? A guy in northern Sinaloa operating on that side of the law has told me CJNG buys significant amounts produced in Sinaloa and delivered to them in Nayarit so I don’t know

    6. 06:39 yea CJNG don’t do cocaine and they don’t do fentanyl or meth, but they sell it in Mexico all over. A lot of cartel violence and stuff is just over street turf wars like punk foos in San Diego and LA ya dig?

  3. Because dextroamphetamine isn’t reasonably available to most. Even those with ADD have to jump through hoops most of the time for it.

Re-legalize the original holy trinity: Benzedrine, Dexedrine and Methedrine

The 1971 act ruined so much. The difference between competence and psychosis/mania for many can be as little as taking it orally instead of smoked or even a matter of which isomer of the methamphetamine molecule that you’re taking.

  4. 4,563 pounds, an estimated street value of $5,475,600. That will be $1200 a pound. Is meth that cheap? I don’t know todays prices but. In 2006 a pound of really good stuff was $7000. By 2008/2009 was between $13000 to $16000 a pound of somewhat ok to good quality. It is hard for me to believe street price will be $1200 a pound. But what do I know.

    2. 11:43 1000 a kilo sounds a little insane. So you’re saying a kilo of meth literally costs the same as an ounce of coke??

    3. No way a pound is $1200. Back in 2001 to 2006 an ounce was $300 to $700. Between 2007 to 2009 was $1000 to $1200. And if they are talking street value you go by 8bls and it will be even more money. Someone is not using mathematical logic the right way.

    4. If Meth is that cheap let me know where to go get one pound lease. Lol

    5. Those are border area wholesale prices for lbs.
The synthetics aren't worth much either because of an oversupply of chemicals, middling quality, lack of demand or a combination of all three. Too much risk for not a lot of money, 5 years at most to make your money before them FEDz jam you up

    6. A lb of meth in socal is 800-1200 depending on quality. A loose oz is like 100. It's cheaper then good weed and that's prolly why we have a homeless/mental health issue with so many people tweaked tf out.. anyone can afford it.
