Teresa Magueyal, A Searching Mother Looking for Son, Killed in Celaya, Guanajuato

By “El Huaso” for Borderland Beat

Yesterday afternoon, Teresa Magueyal, a "madre buscadora" or searching mother, was killed in Celaya, Guanajuato. She was one of Mexico's many family members who have uprooted their lives to search for the remains of their missing relatives, facing threats from the government and criminals.

Teresa was gunned down while riding a bicycle in San Miguel Octopan, a community in the municipality of Celaya. According to El Universal, she was dead when paramedics arrived.

Teresa had been looking for her son who disappeared in 2020.

A statement informing of the attack was posted on the Twitter page of Una Promesa por Cumplir, a promise to keep (UPPC), a disappeared persons search group from Guanajuato. The statement called on local authorities to investigate and bring the killers to justice.

It is unclear who the killers are. María Luisa Núñez Barojas, the founder of a searching group told InSight Crime that those in search collectives often face threats from organized crime as well as the state. According to journalist Analy Nuño, 18 have been killed since 2010 in Mexico.

    1. There's been over 600 mass shootings every single year since 2009 in the US.

    3. Not 600 but an average of 10 per week according to the available data. Under the definition used by the Gun Violence

By the end of 2019, there were 417 mass shootings; by the end of 2020, there had been 611; and by the end of 2021, 693.[41] By mid-May 2021, there were 10 mass shootings per week on average; by mid-May 2022, there was a total of 198 mass shootings in the first 19 weeks of the year, which represents 11 mass shootings a week.

    4. @1014. its a lie?ok But why does your country have shooting drills in school and the rest of the world only fire drills. There must be something behind these numbers.

Thanks for the additional info. They consider "mass shooting" when it's four or more victims. If they would consider three or more it would be much higher.

    12. Kinda like when the the name of the Boston City Marathon Bomber shot and killed by law enforcement was read aloud as a victim of gun violence at a gun control event.

  2. Unbelievable why kill a lady looking for his lost son. Mexico is becoming like Brazil, daytime killings, human life not valued whatsoever.
