AMLO's Administration Has Seen the Most Homicides in Mexican History

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

On May 25, the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador set a record of 156,136 murders in the time since his taking office in December 2018. This number has already surpassed the 6-year time period of the previous administration, with a year and a half still to go. It should be also noted that the figures slightly differ depending on the agency doing the counting, and do not include those who are missing.

According to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (Sesnsp), and the Daily Report of the Secretariat for Citizen Security and Protection (SSPC), [in my personal opinion] the strategy "Hugs, not Bullets." has not worked.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's Term

December 2018-May 2023 (Term Ends September 2024)

156,163+ Homicide Victims

Former President Enrique Peña Nieto's Term

December 2012-November 2018

156,066 Homicide Victims

Former President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa's Term

December 2006-November 2012

120,463 Homicide Victims

Former President Vicente Fox Quesada's Term

December 2000-November 2006

60,280 Homicide Victims

In addition, the López Obrador government also registers the most violent days on record: December 1, 2019, 127 murders; May 24, 2022, 118; June 7, 2020, 117; July 4, 2021, 115.

AMLO Claims Violence Was Inherited

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged that his government is already the most violent six-year term in Mexico's recent history. However, he claims this was due to the "bad inheritance" that previous governments left him. López Obrador accused his predecessors of having created these criminal groups, since he accused that there was a "Narco State," but assured that the crime of homicide is going down.

"Now they tell us 'What a barbarity, the current government is the government that has the most homicides!' Yes, but why don't you put the homicide sheet (he instructed his spokesman Jesús Ramírez) to see how they left the country to us, because this is a bad inheritance in security, but that's how they left us health, education and that's how they left us everything."

The President pointed out that it was the predecessors who created the gangs and criminal groups and which were "consolidating" due to impunity and the complicity of the authorities and gave an example to Genaro García Luna, former Secretary of Public Security in the six-year term of Felipe Calderón and today is imprisoned in the United States for links to drug trafficking.

The president assured that in the past six-year term, homicides increased by 59%, while the worst jump occurred in the Calderón government when they rose by 192%, following the militarization of the drug war in 2006. That variable favors him, because according to his statistics, in the last five years, it has fallen by 17%. "This has cost us a lot, and we hope it continues to decline," said the president.

    1. He isn't taking money from cartels for personal gain, he just isn't. You clearly know nothing about him. He can sound naive and come across as bumbling, but he is not corrupt in the simplistic way people in the US define corruption in Mexico. He may be forced to protect corrupt generals because his power over the army is tenuous, and the balance of power with the US is always on a knife edge. People who laughed at his plan to invest in social programs to cut off young cartel recruitments instead of giving that money to the army that had been working to protect the traffickers, those people predicted murders in Mexico would skyrocket, but they decreased.

  11. I believe El Universal was one of the news publications that was named for taking money from Garcia Luna and the Calderon administration to write favorable articles.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ok. What does that have to do with the homicides during AMLOs term? @11:24

      Delete
    2. 229, ugh, que hueva. It's a very large and complex web and touching on one topic will lead to another. It basically comes down to El Universal along with the mexican mainstream media spearheading an anti amlo campaign. As I mentioned earlier, Garcia Luna was paying to have favorable articles created. AMLO said, "NO MORE CHAYOTE" Meaning he would not pay the mainstream media to write positive articles and that's where the negative articles began.

Again, it gets a lot more complex. AMLOs programs and political moves have been a threat to foreign investors, primarily U.S. and corrupt mexican beneficiaries, like the owners of these mexican media outlets who benefitted from the corruption of Garcia Luna and the past administrations. How does the U.S retaliate? The U.S starts funding the mexican media under the guise of the USAID program (shout out to crazy SIR because he was the first to mention USAID on BB) which supposedly promotes free speech around the world. It's basically a tool to manipulate foreign media and create instability amongst the population wherever the U.S has some type of special interest. What's the result? An AMLO media blackout that focuses on one topic and neglects his achievements.

So back tou your question. Since the mexican media outlets are no longer receiving chayote (funding from the mexican government) and instead receiving it from the U.S, they are going to write what their masters say and add their own spin. Since the U.S is funding the mexican mainstream media through USAID and AMLO is a threat to U.S and other foreign investments, then you're going to read a lot of negative articles.

Let's take a look at the increase in homicides between each administration:

Fox and Calderon, 60k increase in homicides over the term.

Calderon and Peña Nieto, 35K increase in homicides over the term.

Peña Nieto and AMLO, the term isn't over. The article states approximately 100+ difference between their numbers, but if I had to take a guess I would say the final increase in homicides will be between 30k-35k.

Again, I don't want to get into this because it's a lot more complex, but if we ask for the status of those 156k that were killed we'd probably come to find out a small percentage were innocent victims, the other small percentage probably government personnel and the large majority criminals.

So is it fair to pin the blame on AMLO when in reality Calderons actions created the splinter cartels between CDS, CDG and everyone else? After all, if my speculation is correct and the large majority of the homicides are not innocent victims but rather between feuding criminal factions then is it not fair to blame Calderons corrupt administration for siding with certain groups and "inadvertently" contributing to the creation of these feuds?

Again, it's a lot more complex, but lets not forget to mention that the U.S GOVERNMENT was facilitating the introduction of illegal firearms into Mexico. Into a country where those types of firearms are not allowed for civilian use and as a result adding to the homicide rate.

    6. 1033 What you fail to understand is that everything AMLO is currently facing are the unintended consequences of the previous administrations actions and policies. Dating all the way back to Salinas de Gortari, Cedillo, Fox to Calderon and Peña Nieto. All of the issues created by the past administrations are being addressed under the current administration, from infrastructure, corruption, national security to social and economic concerns. The problem with you is, your source of information comes mainly from Mexico's 2 manopolized corporate media companies who have managed to corral 30% of the population to believe that homicides and the drug trade are the only problems mexico faces while ignoring the rest of this governments achievement. Its funny to me that you were expecting all of Mexicos problems to be solved as soon as the new president took office with out realizing that this is a long distance relay race not a 30 yard dash. When in U.S history has that every happend? What Mexican politician do you think would have rescued Mexico had AMLO not been voted in? You can come back with insults but never with any conversation worthy responses.

    7. 11:54 el pez por su propia boca muere. AMLO spewed rhetoric until the end of time how he would fix everything, he created expectations when he sold himself as a great politician and leader. -6 national dam projects
      -12 national road projects
      -4 wind farms
      -1 solar energy farm
      -6 Iberdola power plants
-Built 1 new oil refinery and modernized 6 and bought the DeerBorn oil refinery in Texas.
      -Nationalized the Lithium deposits
-Building of the Tehuantepec Isthmus railway that will create an import/export route which equals more jobs.
-Construction of the Tren Maya which has created direct and indirect jobs and will attract tourism to that region.
-Built 3 new airports along the tren Maya route and remodeled 2
-AMLO scrapped the retarded idea of building an airport on top of Lake Texcoco
-turned the failed airport on top of the lake into a national park.
-Rather than a flooded airport on top of a lake, AMLO opted to build the Felipe Angeles Airport for half the cost. All because he made use of his resources and used the military to build it. The construction of the Felipe Angeles Airport also includes an added museum and a new highway to get there.
-AMLO finally sold the presidential aircraft that cost over 200 million dollars
-Using the aircraft funds to build 2 new state of the art hospitals in Oaxaca and Guerrero.
-Under AMLO the corrupt Polica federal was disbanded and absorbed by the Guardia Nacional. The 30k personnel were absorbed by the Guardia and an additional 90k GN personnel were hired.
-By the end of his term there should be close to 600 military stations throughout the country to house the 120k Guardia Nacional personnel.
-Under AMLO SeDeNa took charge of all land, air and sea ports of entry and not just moved the aduanas headquarters to Nuevo Laredo but is building a new state of the art facility to match the U.S border crossing technology.

Now unlike his predecessors, AMLO did not sell Mexicos natural resources, the train system, or Mexicos energy to foreigners. He's done the opposide by buying a lot of that stuff back and taken control of Mexicos natural resources. AMLO has reclaimed Mexico's national sovereignty. He's limited the DEA's power on Mexican soil, he renegotiated the Merida Initiative with the Bicentennial agreement along with nationalizing and subsidizing Mexicos energy and natural resources. This still doesn't include his contributions to the health sector, the education sector and all of the social programs that the elderly, indigenous and disadvantaged youth have benefitted from. His world leader approval is over 60%, number 2 in the world behind the Indian president.
Now if you don't recognize the information I just provided as actions of a great leader then Im sorry to tell you but you're flat out ignorant and you dont know what the hell you're talking about.

Your statement, "AMLOcos talk about another term being necessary..." is nothing more than a strawman attack. I checked the comments and nobody has mentioned anything about AMLO getting a second term. I even Google your nonsense and several videos came up with AMLO actually saying he was going to retire from politics as soon as his term was over.

I ask because you tend to write MoReNa and SeDeNa which is uncommon just as ViVa. Was that an oversight by you when you wrote "I checked the comments and nobody has mentioned AMLO getting a second term"?
Is Dos Bocas functioning already? Surely no cost overruns right? Tsk, tsk.
El economista.com.mx article from 21/05/23 about said "landmark" project has "otros datos". Not true?
You think El Tren Maya project will be within the estimated budget costs? How about the environmental and safety costs? One serious accident and that ends all the projected revenues it could potentially generate for the people of the region. Engineering better be up to par.
The hospitals in Tlapa Guerrero and Tuxtepec Oaxaca are constructed already?

      Delete
    13. 938 Although "wishing he could stay longer" and saying "another term is necessary" are similar, they are not the same. Whatever though, you could have that one for arguments sake.
Dos Bocas was still built in record time and at a cost effective budget, regardless of your negative thoughts and feelings. You keep thinking and hoping it will never open but you will eat your words when its fully functional vendido.
Same goes with the tren Maya. It will still be built in record time and thanks to the help of the mexican military taking part in the construction process, YES, it will still be under budget, despite all of your whataboutism's.
The Presidential aircraft was just sold last month, so not unless you're talking about superman working faster than a speeding bullet, then, no, the 2 hospitals in Oaxaca and Guerrero are not built yet. They are projected to be constructed by 2024 and I don't see why not since close to 200 hospitales have been completed since AMLO took office.
The list I provided was long and you only took jabs at three of AMLO's projects. I don't expect you to knock everything AMLO has achieved during his term because then you would prove my statement right, "if you don't recognize the information I just provided as actions of a great leader then Im sorry to tell you but you're flat out ignorant and you dont know what the hell you're talking about."

    14. 1:08 continuing with my response. That AMLO sure does have many websites tooting his own horn. Do you ever verify that what he's selling is legit or do you just swallow it all without concern? By the way you copy and paste those comments about all his deeds but still manage to commit errors. WTF? All that brilliant praise undone by mistakes.
Sort of reminds me of that Gilber....individual who would copy and paste much smack about the people of Michoacán but cowardly would never step up to back it up. Some Sinaloa lackey from Coahuila he seemed like, always crying to the moderators. Not "projection" compita, es la neta buey.

I don't know what websites you're talking about but I'm pretty sure you don't know what websites you're talking about either. Not unless AMLO is staging all of the video footage covered on his official YouTube channel, then I'm pretty confident that everything he is sharing on that platform is legit, considering the locations, backdrops, props, paid actors and lengths of each video.

    -Global Conflict Tracker

2018 was a power vaccuum stage in Mexico which started to see an increase in DRUG RELATED homicides, as opposed to collateral damages.
People forget AMLO took over a literal war. and his Hugs Not Bullets approach is vastly misunderstood and corrupted by western media. Mexico is/was a society where children were more accustomed to bullets rather than hugs (in other words; a stable home life). President Obrador managed to localize the areas of violence into certain states while heavily investing in social reforms, education, and tackling unemployment which has dramatically gone down during his term. He dismantled the most corrupt agency in his country and the fact that violence is easier to track TODAY, and the numbers have remained more or less stable (plenty of room for improvement no doubt), just goes to show what a great job he's doing IMO.

I don't really know what a "Cayotero" is but it's your world I suppose.
As for the number I stated; it's based on DRUG RELATED homicides. This means people directly involved in drug trafficking and organized crime as opposed to innocent bystanders and everyday civilians.
It's not exactly hard to see how a trend of social decay led a whole generation astray and right into the hands of narco cultura.

      Delete
    3. 10:35 generations have been led astray. Or have they?
MIZG is probably the most well known practitioner of narcotrafficking in México and he's over 70 years old. Some people don't want to change, they do what they do because they want to, how many male children of druglords dedicate themselves to living noncriminal lives?
Security has to be above everything else, those who chose to engage in criminal behavior sooner or later will be dealt with and their revenue streams will be greatly affected thereby reducing their ability to operate and corrupt.

      Delete
    4. Anon.
I agree that habits are a thing. That doesn't change what the statistics show. The numbers are not dramatically surpassing an ever growing trend in homicides. Surely you can see how that provides a sense of consistency in terms of security.
And of course people can lead normal lives, especially those with the means to do so. I was of course, referring to the other side of the population. The vast majority. The poor and marginalized that see these things and how they are portrayed in the media and realistically they have no other choice. AMLO has addressed these issues as well as the ROOT cause of the issue which is; a massive drug addiction problem in the US as well as the deluge of arms being brought in from that country.

Security begins with the nurturing of society. Not the other way around. The PRI amd PAN had their chance. What Obrador started doesnt look like much now but he will be the first of a new generation of politicians. Actual statesmanship, which is rare these days..
