The journalist, director of the online portal Lo Real de Guerrero, was gunned down this Saturday in the parking lot of a store in Acapulco. This is the second murder of a reporter this year in the port city.

Armed men murdered this Saturday journalist Nelson Matus in Guerrero. Matus was in his car, in the back of a store, in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood, in Acapulco. According to local media reports, hired assassins approached and shot him, taking his life. Matus was left lying dead next to the vehicle. Guerrero authorities have not provided details of what happened.
Matus' murder is the fifth killing of a journalist this year in Mexico and the second in Acapulco. In May, gunmen murdered journalist Gerardo Torres Rentería in the port, this time in his home. At 59 years of age, Torres had been a cameraman for Telemundo and co-founder of TV Azteca Guerrero, although he had been living away from the media for some years.
Between 2000 and 2022, at least 161 journalists have been murdered in Mexico in alleged relation to their work, according to the tally of the organization Article 19. Last year alone there were 13, the most lethal since records began. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), which counts murders and violent deaths of journalists and media workers, put the overall figure at 142.
All in all, CPJ considers Mexico to be the deadliest country in the world for the press. Jan-Albert Hootsen, the Committee's representative in the country, explained last year to this newspaper that Mexico is the only nation where the levels of lethal violence against journalists have not changed, but have remained the same under the different governments. "Violence is a constant. And the conclusion after three years of López Obrador's government is that not only has he not been able to resolve the dozens of murders of journalists, defenders and activists, but he has done very little to prevent them."
Matus' murder comes just days after the last one. Last week, authorities in Nayarit found the remains of Luis Martín Sánchez, correspondent for the daily La Jornada in the region. Martin Sanchez had disappeared three days earlier in Tepic, the capital of Nayarit. His wife reported his absence when he stopped answering messages and calls. The journalist's body appeared in a plastic bag, handcuffed.

He was the first guy that would report all the violent crimes in acapulco back in 2010. Would upload crime scene fotos, chopped up bodies. He got censored after a while though. Very sad
