Two of the victims were found burned inside a vehicle

Over a dozen people, including a police officer and two agents, lost their lives during several armed clashes across Guerrero state last week.

According to police reports, the first incident took place around 7 pm on Wednesday in the community of Buenavista de Allende, located in the municipality of Tecoanapa on the Costa Chica. Members of the self-defense group from the Union of Peoples and Organizations of the State of Guerrero (UPOEG) engaged in a clash with an armed group.

The armed group attacked a house and set it on fire with four people inside. The second event occurred one day prior in the municipality of Eduardo Neri when Guerrero State Police officers encountered armed civilians. These armed individuals had previously stolen a vehicle and abducted a municipal police officer who was on duty at that time.

While attempting to rescue the abducted officer near the Los Tres García ranch, State Police personnel came under gunfire, resulting in the death of a civilian and two state police officers, including Efrén Guzmán Cantú, who served as the coordinator in the Center Region of the State Police.

Although the municipal policeman was eventually rescued, he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention due to their severity.

As reported by Borderland Beat, four tortured bodies were found in Acapulco municipality last week along with a written banner from the perpetrators.

Over the weekend, the remains of two bodies were found inside a completely charred vehicle on the federal highway Tierra Colorada - Ayutla de los Libres.

The day before, self-defense group members from the UPOEG clashed with armed civilians at Buena Vista de Allende for more than four hours, leaving a balance of eight deaths (four gang members and four self-defense groups).

On Saturday in Coyuca de Catalan municipality, Attorney General's Office regional coordinator Ulises Nario García was murdered. Next to the body the assassins left a cardboard.

"This happened to me for supporting Chango Arreola and Hugo Maldonado. Sincerely, Commander Colima", the text read.

Background

In recent months, the central zone of the state of Guerrero has been facing a significant issue with at least three organized crime groups vying for control of the region. This rivalry has led to the disruption of activities in various locations on multiple occasions.

A recent incident involved the city of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, where protests were organized by the criminal group Los Ardillos. During this protest, the group detained 13 police officers and local officials, and took an armored vehicle.

Guerrero ranks seventh in the country in terms of the number of homicides, with 800 murders in the first half of 2023, according to the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC).

  8. What’s going on in Guerrero is hard to understand. You have military, police, self defense, cartels, and who knows who fighting. With the limited local press coming out of there, it’s hard to piece everything together.

    1. It’s been a mess for decades now, sadly..

Don’t forget, it’s a treasure trove for mining and raw opium.

    1. In English it means "twelve" or more sets of twelve. The way you phrased it "24 or more" is actually "two dozens or more".

    3. Well, by the time this was posted, there were literally more dead in the news. I think we are talking about 30-40 plus already since last week. It’s crazy right now

    4. @1041 — I was following the number of narco related deaths in MX, thanks to a counter @ LA Times, the number hit around 250,000 back in 2013…

10 years later, I imagine that number being close to double, and this isn’t even counting “disappearances”!

All and all, I imagine at least 1
MILLION have perished until now (counting deaths and disappearances)… 🦉
