Auto Shops Attacked in Cancun, Violence Against Taxi Drivers - Criminal Violence in Mexico Weekend Roundup - September 1 -3, 2023

By "El Huaso" For Borderland Beat

The contributors at Borderland Beat aim to cover newsworthy and relevant stories related to organized crime and security in Mexico. However, this means that we sometimes miss the many small footprints left by organized crime groups around the country. This article aims to cover more of these events which do not merit a full article.

Baja California, Mexicali - Two gunmen were killed by Municipal Police. The social media account who uploaded the photos claimed they were members of Los Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Mexico State, Cuautitlán Izcalli - A transportation worker autodefensa group captured and beat two men who apparently tried robbing bus passengers, reported El Sol de Toluca. This autodefensa was formed early August to combat the frequent attacks and robberies taxi, Uber, bus, and combi drivers face, reported Zeta Tijuana. (Stay tuned for an article I am writing on this)

Veracruz - There have been 702 clandestine graves found in the state of Veracruz, reported El Universal.

Guerrero, Acapulco - Armed men left bodies in black plastic bags on the side of a road, reported Quadratin Guerrero.

Guerrero, Acapulco - Another taxi driver was killed in Acapulco, reported Quadratin Guerrero. Dozens of taxi and public transport drivers have been killed in the state this year.

Quintana Roo, Cancun - Tourism taxi drivers protested extortion fees imposed by government workers they face while working, reported Novedades Quintana Roo.

Quintana Roo, Cancun - The owner of a tire repair shop was shot by gunmen, likely after failing to pay an extortion fee, reported Quintana Roo Hoy.

Quintana Roo, Cancun - One was killed and another was injured in an armed attack at a carwash reported Quintana Roo Hoy. This attack occurred a 15-minute drive from the event above.

    1. QR got worse with the years. Considering how they fuck up the environment with their concrete blocks called hotels, no problem with less tourists.

  3. This may be answered somewhere else but Sol, Char, Huaso and all the other article contributors - what motivated you to start reporting on the cartel crime and run this site? I know the time researching and writing must be exhausting, especially when there is no monetary incentive or ability to safely reveal your identities for credit.
Thanks and I appreciate all you guys do!

    1. Thanks for your comment! Appreciate the kind message. Always enjoy hearing from readers.

I write for two reasons mainly:

      1) I think the issues of security and organized crime in Latin America and Mexico are central to everything. They infect all aspects of life in the region, from local roads not getting fixed because a crime group siphons off government funds to the general feeling of insecurity and anxiety many children have due to fear of being kidnapped. The issues Borderland Beat covers therefore are really important to cover, and cover well. Hopefully by learning more about crime groups, we can learn how to dismantle them.

      2) I'm very curious and I like to learn and write about things. I write about this rather than other topics because of reason 1. This has become my fixation for the last several years because I see this as my part to play in the fight for a better future in the Americas.

You gotta put your time somewhere right?

      All the best,

      Huaso

    2. Thank you Huaso!
Do you think that the current media - especially platforms like Netflix pushing so many Narco based series, celebrity artists such as Snoop Dogg collaborating with Banda MS and praising narco vs gang structure, and the pro footballer throwing a JGL theme birthday for his son, glorifying narco culture and in default giving more power to the cartels with this current generation of youth?
Especially in the US now by seeing these and living vicariously through them since in the US narco culture is viewed more as works of fiction and tales similar to the Wild West by having a level of separation which is blinding them to the real life daily destruction the cartels are causing?

    3. @1240 — Lmao I’ll never forget when Snoop quit smoking weed TWICE and pulled that whole Rastarfian bullshit.. “from here on out call me Snoop Lion” 🤣😂

    4. @12:40 That's a really interesting question, and I absolutely think so. There's a lot to say about it, but I think Mexico is engaged in a multidimensional conflict against organized crime.

One dimension is the physical fight for street corners, capturing criminals, and engaging in shootouts.

The second dimension is the war of propaganda - this includes narco messages, banners, death videos, and I think media that depicts the narco in a positive light. TV shows, narco music, even a soccer star hosting a narco themed birthday party for his kid. It all normalizes and venerates criminality.

Some people think that stories are just stories, but I think the stories we tell matter. They inspire and define our times. Think of books like Uncle Tom's Cabin, which fanned the fire of abolition in the United States.

Thanks for your question and all the best! What do you think?
