An agent who was instrumental in the U.S. case against Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán released a photograph of his son, Ovidio Guzmán López, on the plane that transported him to Chicago. At the same time, a video showed Emma Coronel partying two days after her release and while her stepson was being extradited.
Agent Derek Maltz, former director of the Justice Department's Special Operations Division and former DEA agent for 28 years, now retired, published the photograph of Ovidio Guzmán, 33, on board the plane that took them to Illinois, where he faces charges of criminal association and drug trafficking.
Ovidio Guzmán, welcome to the United States, may you enjoy the family reunion with your father El Chapo in a high security prison," said Maltz, a former official now a frequent guest on live newscasts to give his opinion on CBS, NBC and CNN among other networks.
Posting messages on social media about the extradition of Ovidio Guzman, Maltz said that "there is still a need to close the (drug trafficking) operations in Mexico.
Maltz was the agent responsible for synchronizing efforts by the DEA, the Justice Department's Special Operations Division and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) to arrest and prosecute El Chapo Guzman.
In his posts on Ovid's extradition, he wrote that this transfer to U.S. justice was "a positive development, but keep in mind that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) released its latest drug death figures for the 12 months ending April 2023 at 111,355."
He praised that the extradition was "a great job by DEA HQ, HSI, prosecutors and law enforcement officers across the country saving lives."
At the same time, a video posted on TikTok showed Coronel leaving Friday night at El Farallon - an event hall located in Lynwood, near Los Angeles - which also posted images of El Chapo's wife on its Instagram profile, hours after Ovidio Guzman arrived in Chicago to face charges in the first of three federal courts in which he faces prosecution, including New York and Washington DC.
Coronel walked free on Wednesday after completing a significantly reduced sentence that dropped from a potential life sentence to just two and a half years in prison, the last six months in a low-security facility in Long Beach, where she only had to report to spend the evenings.
The mother of 11-year-old twins will remain in Los Angeles where she will have to serve a four-year probation period and take a Federal Bureau of Prisons express parent course.
Coronel, who was partying in boots, light-colored tight-fitting spandex pants and a vest-style blouse, was released just 24 hours before Mexico extradited Ovidio Guzman.
Some comments on social networks mentioned without evidence that Coronel got a reduced sentence because she collaborated with the US government to secure the arrest and extradition of Ovidio Guzmán.
The extradition of Ovidio Guzmán López is just a temporary victory. If both the Mexican and American authorities want to debilitate the Sinaloa Cartel, then it should focus a lot more on finding and arresting Ismael Zambada García and the remaining Chapitos.
