Chihuahua, Chihuahua: Los Tucanes de Tijuana Fined For Singing Narco Ballads

"Sol Prendido" for Borderland Beat

One of the songs they played was "Fiesta en la sierra", dedicated to Sandra Ávila Beltrán, known as "La Reina del Pacífico".

The group Los Tucanes de Tijuana was fined approximately 900,000 pesos for singing narco corridos during their performance last Thursday, October 5 at the fair in the municipality of Chihuahua, Chihuahua.

The municipal government of Chihuahua stated that Los Tucanes de Tijuana were sanctioned with eight thousand 681 UMAS, which is equivalent to nearly 900 thousand pesos for the content of their songs that advocate crime.

In a press release, it explained that in their presentation it was found that 40 percent of their songs contained this type of content, for which reason they were fined this amount.

It also indicated that the money obtained from the offense would be destined as compensation to the Municipal DIF for the benefit of the social fabric of Chihuahua.

In addition, he emphasized that there was no music that promoted violence against women and that did not promote their denigration, discrimination, marginalization or exclusion within the repertoire.

Among the songs that were found to be in defense of crime was "Fiesta en la sierra", dedicated to Sandra Ávila Beltrán, known as "La Reina del Pacífico" (The Queen of the Pacific).

The sanction is the result of violating articles 208 and 209 of the Regulation of Amusements and Shows for the Municipality of Chihuahua, which refer to the correct performance of public shows and the reproduction of narco corridos or corridos bélicos, as some songs are called.

"The fine to be imposed as a sanction for violation of the provisions contained in articles 208 sections I and VII, and 209 section I, which are exclusively related to the interpretation or reproduction of musical contents, videos, images or anything similar that make apology of the crime or of the authors of illicit acts, will be equivalent to one thousand 500 to five thousand times the minimum wage", reads the Regulation.

On September 23, singer Natanael Cano also received a fine of 12 thousand UMAS, equivalent to one million 244 thousand 880 pesos, from the government of the capital of Chihuahua, through the sub-directorate of Governance of the Secretariat of the City Council of said municipality.

This measure was taken against him after having interpreted musical content that advocates the crime of promoting violence against women, according to the authorities.

According to the Government, the artist violated Article 34 of the Civic Justice Regulations, as well as Articles 208, 209 and 222 of the Amusement and Entertainment Regulations for the municipality of Chihuahua, which prohibit songs that incite discrimination, denigration and violence against women, as well as tributes to organized violence.

  2. I think the whole dining the bands for singing narco songs is going to have opposite effect of what law enforcement l/government is hoping it to do. It’s going to raise the prices of the concerts and fans/narcos are going to pay even more for the concerts so that they will able to be a part/see their songs performed on the rare occasion. Could be completely wrong but I feel like that’s going to be the end result

    1. Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe that attention would be better served giving it to the actual crime. Or putting it in weeding out their dirty cops and politicians. All this shit didn't start because of the music. It started because of corruption. Give that more attention instead of wasting time and money supervising concerts. Know how corrupt they are they're going to start finding infractions at a church choir just to get that money.
