The CJNG hitmen who forced a young man to stab his four friends to death on camera have allegedly been arrested. Here’s what we know about the detainees so far.

Quick Review
In August 2023, five friends were abducted by cartel hitmen in the town of Lagos de Moreno, located in the state of Jalisco.
Soon after they disappeared, a video was released which showed one of the men being forced to kill his four friends, who were unarmed and tied up. The man was given only a knife and a rock to carry out the task. Family members of the missing first learned of their death through the video being shared on social media.
The psychologically twisted nature of the video drew national attention and law enforcement began searching for the hitmen responsible.
It was not immediately clear which cartel group had created the video because the larger region was being contested between the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generation (CJNG) and the Sinaloa Cartel, however, the CJNG was heavily suspected.
Law enforcement was able to locate the property where the video was filmed and an additional “property of interest”, however, the investigation then seemed to stall for months, with no substantial updates on the case being released. Then, last week, law enforcement announced they had found the cellphones of the victims “in a property where the victims are believed to have been taken.”
The Lagos Killers Arrested
On December 7, 2023, the federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) announced that law enforcement and the military had arrested five CJNG hitmen who were allegedly involved in the abduction and murder of the Lagos five.
Strangely, the FGR statement doesn’t clarify when or where the arrest occurred, other than to say it took place in the Altos Norte region of Jalisco. The detainees are:
Isidro "N", alias "El Chilo", 45 years old
Luis Antonio “N”, alias “La Morsa” , 41 years old
Eruviel “N”, alias “El Conejo” (The Rabbit), 35 years old
JosĂ© Fernando “N”, alias “El Fercho” (The Driver), 22 years old
VĂctor Armando “N”, alias “El Diablito” (The Little Devil), 21 years old
Dominio Publico writes that the detainees “were allegedly detained while carrying weapons and three vehicles, as well as thousands of fentanyl pills and thousands of cocaine baggies, and a few kilos of marijuana, were seized from them.”
The November 19th Attack on the Soldiers
The FGR alleges these five CJNG hitmen are also connected to an attack that took place three weeks ago, on November 19, in which cartel hitmen ambushed soldiers in the town of Teocaltiche, Jalisco, leaving 3 soldiers dead and 3 more injured.
The soldiers were driving through Teocaltiche because dispatch received a 911 call which reported that CJNG hitmen were abducting 18-year old Vicente Sánchez Luevano from his home.
After the attack and once the injured soldiers were evac-ed from the area, the military started a major ground search in the area and Dominio Publico claimed soldiers were searching for Gerardo González RamĂrez, aliases "El Gera", "El GĂĽero", and "El Apa”, a CJNG figure from the subgroup los Guerreros.
He’s known to be leading a CJNG group in Nochistlán, Zacatecas, which is trying to out Mario Gonzalez and his CDS hitmen from the Teocaltiche area. El Gera is known to work under Adrián Alonso Guerrero Covarrubias, alias “El 08”.
Who Do They Work for in the CJNG
ADN 40 writes that, “according to investigations”, the hitmen come from a criminal group “which calls itself GEDDRI (Grupo Elite Delictivo de ReacciĂłn Inmediata).”
Old Guacamaya-leaked intelligence documents showed that GEDDRI primarily operated within the Altos Norte region of Jalisco, which lines up with the location of the kidnapping and the November 19th ambush.
The Guacamaya documents alleged GEDDRI reported under Hugo Gonzalo Mendoza Gaytán, aliases “El Sapo” (The Toad) and “El 090”. However, as noted earlier, these intelligence documents were somewhat old.
Sidenote: Every news outlet and Twitter account is running with it being spelled “GEDRI” but the insignia clearly spells “GEDDRI”, choosing to include the “de” in the initialism. All the sources which are repeating “GEDRI” are not doing basic due diligence.
Dominio Publico and ADN 40 write that El Chilo led a local GEDDRI cell. El Chilo reportedly received orders from JosĂ© Luis GĂłmez Escalera, alias “El Kiki”, who is the overall leader of GEDDRI, which is “directly linked to the brothers Leonardo and Adrián Guerrero Covarrubias, who are regional heads of the CJNG.”
Neither publication makes it clear if the link to Adrián Guerrero Covarrubias, alias “El 08”, and his brother Leonardo comes from law enforcement or their own beliefs about the region.
So, basically we’ve got two newspapers claiming that GEDDRI works under the Guerrero brothers, but neither clarify the source for this claim, and we’ve also got old intelligence documents which claim GEDDRI works under El Sapo. Both sources have their own potential weaknesses.
ADN 40 also claims that “this armed cell operated directly under the orders of Nemesio RubĂ©n Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, and they had a mandate to carry out attacks on military forces as well as to exert their control over the municipalities of Teocaltiche, Encarnacion de Diaz and Villa Hidalgo.”
It’s unclear if ADN is referring to El Chilo’s cell or the larger GEDDRI group when it claims that they worked directly under Mencho.
New information will be added as the story develops

HEARST, how do you classify these municipalities under someone’s control?
ReplyDeleteI mean does the group have to maintain 100% control of the municipality for you to give it to them, or is it like >80%, how do you qualify that?
First off, thank you for the question. Most people don’t show much interest in my maps so I really appreciate it.
DeleteI’d say if a group has 60% control over an area, I’d mark it as being “held” by a group on my map. But I’ll be the first to admit that all of these percentages (60%, 80%) we’re referencing are highly subjective because extremely rural areas may not be held by anybody. All of cartel control is tied to population, really.
Just a side note, but the map featured in this story is meant to show who controlled those areas at the time of the kidnapping. The territory war over this region continued on after this incident and control over has likely changed.
I love the maps HEARST! Thank you for always adding these to the articles =]
DeleteI hear you and I'm open to your opinion.
DeleteBut how do you explain the gunfights that keep happening in San Juan.

And, there was a shootout in Jalostotilan just a couple of months ago.

1:19 son pedos entre propios del CJNG
DeleteHowever the CJNG certainly controls more than 60% of these municipalities to give it them.
DeleteMore shotouts occur in Teocaltiche, but that doesn't mean this zone should be designated "contested" just yet.
Yesterday the CJNG also left two bodies in Encarnacion de Diaz with a message for the CDS.
Your maps are great, but I think you are giving CDS more territory in this zone than it actually is.
You bring up a fair point and I'll think about revising it for future stories. I'll keep researching as I go. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
DeleteHearst:
DeleteYour maps are greatly appreciated. My only thought on this map is the last I heard was one of the Jauregui's tied to CJNG was running for mayor of Apulco. I believe it may be a contested town. If you have information showing that Mario Gonzalez still controls Apulco, it would be appreciated if you share it here.
Also, thanks for pulling this article together. It was very well done as usual.
DeleteY eso que segun el ejercito no los trai del culo.
ReplyDeleteClaro que sĂ pero ni modo que pongan eso en sus corridos
DeleteWhat about dude who actually did the murders? The one who betrayed his "friends"? Whats up with him?
ReplyDelete11:02 - I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they killed him shortly after they had him kill his friends. Keeping someone like that alive probably wouldn’t be a good idea since he could easily testify against you and say you were the one who kidnapped him, and you were the one who held him at gunpoint and forced him to kill his own friends.
Delete11:21 testifying against any cartel would get you killed and family. Most likely he got killed after killing his friends. Sad barbaric people
DeleteBuena tu pregunta.
DeleteHe was either "pressganged" into joining CJNG, or He was promised a Quick death if He does what they FORCED HIM TO DO on gunpoint.. He didn't Betray anyone. They grew up together. He wanted to survive.. This is an old Zeta tactic to make prisoners fight to the Death.. This is pure Evil.
DeleteSaludos to the police for getting this trash off the street. One thing is to shoot a man, but their method of friends killing friends is just evil.
ReplyDeleteThese cats look old beyond their years.
ReplyDelete11:16 - Probably drugs and stress. These guys are probably looking over their shoulders every second of every day.
Delete@ 11:16 I'm sure you are right. Their life expectancy is extremely limited as well. Despite them being socio or psychopaths, they probably will be haunted for the rest of their miserable lives by the horrible acts they have committed on others.
Delete11:16 it was the first thing I noticed, meth does that to the human body. The 21 year old looks like an old man.
DeleteEstos pendejos son Gente del sapo 80 y comandante nabo de la garita
ReplyDeleteI thought Nabo was in a totally different region, near Mazamitla and Garita?

Great to see you are back HEARST. I want to mention that I don't think anyone else knows how to convey this complex and uncertain information as clearly as you do in this subject, kudos.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Seregalin! That means a lot to me.
DeleteAccording to gafe and cjng groupies it was mz from zacatecas that were deep in cjng territory that did that to heat up the area 🙄. The truth always comes out, cjng raising hell causing all sorts of innocent deaths in their home state
ReplyDeleteMZ from Zacatecas? It was possible as there was graffiti on the execution house walls that had those letters. It was also entirely within the possibilities that Mario González and his faction from Teocaltiche could have killed them as he's fighting them in that general area.
DeleteSo I guess now that the killers have been captured and interrogated the authorities will inform the public about what happened to the lone unaccounted for missing young man and their remains of the other victims.
No. It was CJNG pretending to be MZ.
