US Ambassador to Mexico Confirms "El Mayo" Was Brought to US Against His Will

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

The U.S. ambassador to Mexico confirmed Friday that drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada was brought to the United States against his will when he arrived in Texas in July on a plane along with fellow drug lord Joaquín Guzmán López.

Zambada’s attorney had earlier claimed the longtime chief of the Sinaloa cartel had been kidnapped. But officials had not confirmed that and Zambada’s age and apparent ill-health had led some to speculate he turned himself in.

U.S. Ambassador Ken Salazar on Friday said “the evidence we saw ... is that they had brought El Mayo Zambada against his will.”

“This was an operation between cartels, where one turned the other one in,” Salazar said. Zambada’s faction of the Sinaloa cartel has been engaged in fierce fighting with another faction, led by the sons of imprisoned drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Guzmán López is the half-brother of the factional leaders.

Ken Zalazar issued a statement that included:

Regarding the findings, I can elaborate on the following:
  • Joaquín Guzmán surrendered voluntarily.
  • The evidence at the time of arrival indicates that El Mayo was taken against his will.
  • No U.S. resources were used in the surrender. It was not our plane, our pilot, or our people.
  • No flight plan was filed with U.S. authorities. We understand that the flight began in Sinaloa and landed in Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
  • The pilot was not an employee or contracted by the United States Government, nor was he an American citizen.
Salazar said no U.S. personnel, resources or aircraft were involved in the flight on which Guzmán López turned himself in, and that U.S. officials were “surprised” when the two showed up at an airport outside El Paso, Texas on July 25.

“They did not provide a flight plan. There was no flight that was registered with the United States agencies. There is none. Our understanding is that the flight left Sinaloa and is arriving in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. We were surprised when that happened. And that? The moment we found out. We were immediately in contact with our friends and colleagues in the Mexican government. That same day, that same afternoon, at those same hours,” explained Salazar.

Frank Pérez, Zambada’s attorney, said in a statement in July that “my client neither surrendered nor negotiated any terms with the U.S. government.”

“Joaquín Guzmán López forcibly kidnapped my client,” Pérez wrote. “He was ambushed, thrown to the ground, and handcuffed by 6 men in military uniforms and Joaquin. His legs were tied, and a black bag was placed over his head.”

Pérez went on to say that Zambada, 76, was thrown in the back of a pickup truck, forced onto a plane and tied to the seat by Guzmán López.

In early August, Zambada made his second appearance in federal court in Texas after being taken into U.S. custody the week before.

Guzmán López had apparently long been in negotiations with U.S. authorities about possibly turning himself in. Guzmán López, 38, has pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and other charges in federal court in Chicago.

But U.S. officials said they had almost no warning when Guzmán López’s plane landed at an airport near El Paso. Both men were arrested and remain jailed. They are charged in the U.S. with various drug crimes.

Salazar said the plane had taken off from Sinaloa — the Pacific coast state where the cartel is headquartered — and had filed no flight plan. He stressed the pilot wasn’t American, nor was the plane.

The implication is that Guzmán López intended to turn himself in, and brought Zambada with him to procure more favorable treatment, but his motives remain unclear.

High level negotiations have been ongoing with American gvt officials and El Chapo(a wonderful day in supermax for El Chapo when the DEA comes to visit and he leaves his solitary confinement cell) and the Chapitos since El Chapo has been incarcerated. After Ovidio's arrest these meetings intensified. El Chapo probably even had special visits with Emma and the twins. Lower security for El Chapo and visits from Emma and the twins will be a big improvement in El Chapo's life and, of course, a good deal for Ovidio and Joaquin. Chapo was always a master at playing what bargaining chips he had!

  6. This sounds way too fishy. Let's look at the pros and cons. Will we ever know who the pilot really was? So who collects the 15 million dollar reward. What are the legal ramifications for a person who is kidnapped and taken to another country under Mexican Law, U.S Law and International Law. This article claims the U.S knew nothing yet, eyewitness accounts claim there were U.S government officials at the airport already waiting for the plane... If there is one thing I've learned as I've gotten older its that not only can you not trust the government and their politicians but you can not trust the media to tell the people the truth. The media is in bed with the government... I still believe both cut a deal. From my understanding, due to Mayos state of health, he's been receiving better medical attention on the U.S side than most people who have lived in the U.S their whole lives with no criminal records....

He's going to literally pay for that health care and more when he's done repaying for all the crimes he committed personally or through others in the USA.

  8. It obviously makes more sense that he made a deal but people close to the mayo faction still believe he was kidnapped.

What doesn’t make sense is why Joaquin would bring mayo without a deal in place. There has to be a deal cuz without it the US could give him nothing more then a thank you if they wanted to. Maybe he did it for the 15 milly 🤣

  9. “We had almost no notice” means that they likely had last minute notices from chapo’s son. It might sound far-fetched but it’s probably true, as problematic as it sounds, Chapo’s son baited/kidnapped MZ for a better deal.

Someone in El Mayo's cartel, for the reward $$ or legal favours, set him up for Joaquin to bag! With the low-level war between the 2 cartels, I highly doubt mayo would meet with Joaquin without a small army and a secure location of his choosing, if at all!

I mean shit, what happened to the Chapito/Chapiza feud with Mayo and Mayo/Rusos/CDS?

This would have been more believable if they had not made stupid statements. There is no way that Mayo is unaware that he was being brought to the USA. There is no way.

Mayo also does not look very good for someone in their 70s. Shit. My pops is way older and healthier.

How does turning Mayo in help Ovidio? or Ivan or Alfredito?

Ahh I miss the smell of Ovidio's sweaty socks.

Well, now the USA will have to pay JGL 12 million dollars for the capture of El Mayo. Then JGL can split the remaining 6 million after US taxes (of course) with his brother Ovidio for legal defenses. So each Chapitu gets $3 million dollars for lawyers.

      That's a great deal.
I mean if JGL was smart he would have contacted the DEA Mayo tips hotline and pre negotiated payment in several Monster Boxes of US 1oz. Gold Eagle coins to skirt income tax on the bounty.

  18. As they saying goes, "Follow the Money". Somebody got paid 15 million from the US Govt. for the Zambada reward. As far as the Chapo boy, I think he turned himself in to help both his brother and himself or maybe the half brother was tricked by the other 2 Chapitos, who are still running things. I strongly believe the 2 remaining brothers organized this whole deal so they can stay in power and keep everything for themselves. Mayo's son needs to be very careful and watch for traders and keep an extra eye open for the Chapitos who will be looking to take him out.

  22. Poor Mayo. This guy actually prevented all out war from happening in Sinaloa after the last Chapo arrest. He maintained a lot of peace in the state. I can give you an example. Remember when El Nini and his men went into MZ territory commanded by El Ruso inside of Sinaloa and beat up cops under MZ payroll? El Ruso's men had small scurmishes with El Nini's Men. Mayo stepped in and had a meeting with Ruso. He wanted to prevent all out war. He ordered El Ruso out of Sinaloa. El Ruso was angry but had to follow orders. They should release MZ at once and send him back Sinaloa to maintain the peace. Nuff Said!!!
