Three Killed in Rehab Center Attack in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato

By "El Huaso" for Borderland Beat

Three were killed and another two were injured after gunmen attacked a drug and alcohol rehab clinic in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato yesterday. This is the second attack at a rehab center in Guanajuato this month.

The attack occured in colonia San Martín in the eastern part of San Miguel around 7:00 PM on Saturday. As is typical of attacks in Guanajuato, the gunmen arrived on motorbikes and fled the scene before authorities arrived. According to Periodico Correo, two of the victims were patients of the clinic while the third was a youth who worked nearby.

The unlicensed rehab clinic was being run out of a home, which has now been seized by the State Attorney General's office.

This is the second attack at a rehab center in Guanajuato this month. The last attack occured on October 1st, when gunmen killed five at a clinic in Salamanca, as reported by Borderland Beat.

Five were killed at a rehab center earlier this month in Salamanca.

Attacks like these are common in Guanajuato state, the most violent region in Mexico for the last several years. Businesses are often targeted by organized crime for failing to pay extorsion rents or allowing rival drugs to be sold on premises, while drug rehab clinics are attacked as criminal groups fear that they may provide hiding places as well as potential recruiting pipelines for rival groups.

  1. Most likely another senseless shooting by CJNG. Guanajuato was a very peaceful state before these scumbags arrived. They are modern day zetas. Nuff Said!!!

  7. Have heard all the stories about these anexos. In this case, these were 16 and 17 year old kids who were trying to get their lives on track. Hope the killers rot in hell.

  8. How do these rehab centers work? Publicly or privately funded? Are they just places to dry out or do they offer counseling and drugs like Methadone and Antabuse?

    1. These are mostly unregulated. Run out of homes, with little oversight. Lots of allegations of abuses. But people attend them - they must have some use, especially given the lack of official rehabs

    2. Family pays all of it. The cost is between $850 and $1,300 plus a donation of cleaning supplies, weekly/biweekly depending on intensity. As far as I know all these places are involuntary and very few have those drug substitutes available. Some of them have a sort of spiritual component and these are the most popular ones. You're given this brew that cleanses your body and soul. Counseling consists of a guy that cites the Bible and often manages the whole place. They get off on snatching you off the street. Normally the family sets you up and the picking you up part plays out comically. Or they'll just beat you into the van. All the places I know are ran by the patients. You're assigned responsibilities according to your progress as defined by the one counselor. The top "job" in these places is being an enforcer. You get to go outside, you become the plug, you get to assist the counselor in the intense interventions, you're immune from cleaning duty, priority on meals, and the best part is going out to pickup new patients. Minimum time recommend is usually 3 months to get better. I don't know of anyone that has been to these places only 1 time. I know someone thats been in these places over 15 times within 20 years.

    5. Like 15 years ago, I was some time in Guadalajara and stayed with a padre (a dominee?) who had a little rancho where addicts could get sober, supported by their faith in god. It was not hyperprofessional, but it was cheap for the addicts.
