The patron founder of Los Zetas and former leader of the Gulf Cartel, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén has been returned to Mexico after serving his US sentence and was quickly re-arrested by Mexican authorities.
Cárdenas Guillén once led the feared Gulf Cartel before he was arrested and extradited to the United States in 2007.
US Homeland Security Department confirmed in its social media accounts Monday that Cárdenas Guillén had been returned after serving 14 years in US custody, most of his 25-year US prison sentence.

He is a Mexican citizen, so presumably he was deported. He was handed over at the San Diego-Tijuana border crossing.

Back in the early 2000's an extradition was to be feared, now the "Capos" will snitch on their own father's and immediate family and get a big time pass. You can’t write such articles unless you are boots on the ground here or have primary sources (BB doesn’t and I’ve pointed this out in the past.) It’s a legitimate criticism and yes, the majority of the content is recycled and doesn’t seem to have a rhyme or reason to how it’s curated. Unfortunately (for all of us interested), absent primary sources, providing satisfying and substantive content is impossible because these matters are not well investigated, prosecuted, documented, or published here in Mexico. In the US, particularly after prosecutions, it’s common that organizational roles, structure, operations, and participants have been illuminated which leads to a better understanding of the dynamics of that or similar organizations moving forward. Everything I have read here and elsewhere about Mexican DTOs leaves me with the impression of a blind man touching and describing the ear of an elephant. In most cases, we have a very very broad strokes painting of the criminal landscape here.
