Osiel Cárdenas Guillén Deported from US and Arrested in Mexico

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

The patron founder of Los Zetas and former leader of the Gulf Cartel, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén has been returned to Mexico after serving his US sentence and was quickly re-arrested by Mexican authorities.

Cárdenas Guillén once led the feared Gulf Cartel before he was arrested and extradited to the United States in 2007.

US Homeland Security Department confirmed in its social media accounts Monday that Cárdenas Guillén had been returned after serving 14 years in US custody, most of his 25-year US prison sentence.

He is a Mexican citizen, so presumably he was deported. He was handed over at the San Diego-Tijuana border crossing.

A Mexican federal official who was not authorized to be quoted by name said Cárdenas Guillén had immediately been taken into custody in Mexico on drug, organized crime and money-laundering charges.

The official said Cárdenas Guillén was being held at the country’s top maximum-security Altiplano prison just west of Mexico City.

  1. This is one I don’t get

I know Eduardo Arellano wasn’t and isn’t going to get back in the game but Osiel is a witness and a snitch and he’s headed right back into Mexico

Was this part of his own plan or the US just burning him? As a witness he can stay in the US if he wanted to. Look at Mayito, Damaso, Vicente

    1. He had threatened the two US agents in Mexico, that may have something to do with it. There may have been some agreement too when he was extradited back then.

    2. In Mexico with the arrest of ranking capos there is more to the story than justice. Could be pressure from the existing criminal fabric of politicos and cartels to keep him out of the game or fleece him of $$$ to buy his way back into the game or to make sure he knows who is the boss before he is released back into the game or a any combination of the previous!

    6. No he can’t stay in the US because he’s a witness. They never gave him that protection.

  3. Why would they let him out after ‘most’ of his sentence? That guy has hundreds if not thousands of bodies on his head. This isn’t a f-cking hit and run!!

    2. Because this isn’t really about justice served. It’s about continuing to enforce this cat and mouse game so that when capos are arrested, the government can seize the money, squeeze information out of them, and let them out early. That’s the war on drugs.

Instead of actually punishing individuals who do this or addressing the drug issue as a health problem, we’ve made this a law enforcement issue.

      Delete
    3. @12.31. Your comment is so confused. "Instead of actually punishing individuals"? He just served most of 25 years in a supermax and now he's being deported by agreement to face who knows what. Of course the drug war is filled with bullshit, but do you think they should NOT seize the money, or squeeze them for info? Murder, kidnap, torture, everything Los Zetas did under his command- those were not "health problems", and they didn't arise from prohibition like some crimes.

    3. 8:21 Detroit, OCG cooperated with the USA to not get a life sentence like his predecessor Juan García Ábrego. Back in the early 2000's an extradition was to be feared, now the "Capos" will snitch on their own father's and immediate family and get a big time pass. OCG if I'm not mistaken was extradited on the same plane as "El Güero Palma" or "El JT". I think it was the former.
Between his prison release and removal to México he was receiving his instructions. Ponte verga y arregla todo el puto desmadre que empezaste con tus ojetes. El negoció es para ganar no para andar de muerto de hambre.

  14. The Mexican justice system is going to slap murder and drug trafficking charges on him, that's why he is back in jail. He's going to do a lot of time in a Mexican prison and I don't see him getting out for a long time.

  15. Everyone here talking about Osiel is back and this and that. Osiel had lawyers fighting his deportation. He wasn’t trying to come back to Mexico. He knew he had charges pending and a lot of ppl want him dead. Starting with his nephew Contador and 40. It’s going to be interesting how things play out for him. He is definitely going to be incarcerated for a while in Mexico.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe that if he orders his nephew dead it wld get done. There are many people in matamoros that are still loyal to him. Plus el contador is not very popular even amongst his own family. Mario Cardenas is also out of prison. And el contador was freed in mexico and didnt make the news but apparently the matamoros faction is making incursions into reynosa. As soon as el contador hit the street the war is heating up again.

      Delete
    2. @2.28. There are people in Matamoros who are loyal to the idea of him. To the old Osiel, not the broken man who can barely string a sentence together.

      Delete
    3. El Contador wants him dead, you sure about that? Yes I know there are rumors in that vein, on the flip side there have been strong rumors that El Contador has always taken orders from Osiel via son-in-laws. Time will tell.

      Delete
    4. Everyone knows Contador and Gordo (Osiel son in law) NEVER got along lol idk where y’all get y’all info I’m assuming these blogs. Osiel tried his best to not get deported. It’s literally public records the motions he presented. He was in fear for his life bc his nephew wants him dead. Everyone knows that in matamoros. His direct family meaning his kids, don’t even live in matamoros any more. His son in law is a cooperating witness against contador

They are onboard, strictly volleenteer basis. Writing on their own takes more time. You want to write articles on your own, without getting paid?

    3. Things change over time you know? Many have jobs and family. Then having time for hours and hours daily to do research and cross checking and writing large articles for free is not easy. How about you and doing some work. Just put your money to your mouth and start writing.
I am happy that we still have some ppl left translating articles and often adding some additional info to it.
