A member of the Sinaloa cartel was arrested in Texas by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the weekend and was found to be carrying three rifles, two pistols and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition.
The individual — who is from Mexico — was taken into custody in El Paso, the sources added. Across the U.S., ICE operations this past weekend resulted in more than 1,000 arrests.
The head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said last year that the U.S. is facing the "most dangerous and deadly drug crisis" in its history with fentanyl and methamphetamine flowing across the border — and that the "Sinaloa and Jalisco Cartels are at the heart of this crisis."
"They operate clandestine labs in Mexico where they manufacture these drugs and then utilize their vast distribution networks to transport the drugs into the United States," DEA Administrator Anne Milgram wrote in her agency’s annual National Drug Threat Assessment.
"The Sinaloa Cartel also uses border tunnels to cross drugs into the United States undetected," she added. "Most of the tunnels are not built by the cartel but are part of the border cities’ sewage and water systems."
Last week, alleged Sinaloa cartel cell leader Octavio Leal-Hernandez, who "is believed responsible for trafficking large amounts of methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana into the United States from Mexico," entered a not guilty plea during a federal court appearance following his extradition from Mexico, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of California said.
The alleged Sinaloa member’s arrest in El Paso comes as reports are also emerging that the Trump administration is pushing ICE to increase the number of arrests per day from a few hundred to between at least 1,200 to 1,500 people.
Citing four sources who spoke on condition of anonymity about a purported internal call with ICE officials on Saturday, The Washington Post first reported about the new objective, categorizing the 1,200 to 1,500 daily targets as "quotas," although a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security told Fox News, "Goals is the correct phrasing."

During his arrest, he was found to have a long gun loaded with 26 rounds, a short gun loaded with 17 rounds, two plastic bags with 1,367 fentanyl pills, and 39 electronic devices.
Later, during the initial hearing, the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF) presented the evidence that was sufficient for the judge to grant the link to the trial, official preventive detention in CEFERESO 1 "Altiplano" and five months for the complementary investigation.

The top aide or secretary of El Comanche once again released an audio broadcast criticizing La Chapiza members and the Sinaloa government. El Comanche is a high-ranking member of the "Mayo Zambada" criminal organization, which is led by Ismael Zambada Sicairos, "Mayito Flaco" son of Ismael Zambada Garcia.
Sinaloa has seen a wave of violent events in recent days, and what has become clear for the Sinaloan people is the Governor of Sinaloa Ruben Rocha Moya has to step down from his position. Although Ruben Rocha Moya seems to have the support from the Mexican federal government, the people of Sinaloa believe otherwise.
The following audio broadcast by the secretary of El Comanche claims that Ruben Rocha Moya is supporting La Chapiza, and freed Jose Angel Canobbio Inzunza, "El Guerito" principal lieutenant of Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar from a recent military operation.
El Comanche and his brother McKlein are leading operations against the La Chapiza Cartel in Culiacan, Sinaloa, with the blessing of Ismael Zambada Sicairos.
Hello there Chapo Zetas. Hello there Chapo Zetas. You’re no longer Chapo Zetas. Now, you guys are child killers. Despicable pigs, swine, murderers of innocents. All of that crying that you’re doing with Mayito Flaco. Blaming us for killing innocent civilians. When you know damn well that it was you guys who killed those two kids recently.
Filthy pigs. On top of this Rocha Moya is covering for your mob. It’s clearly evident with everyone he let go. Case in point would be for El Mórral and Jose Angel. They were detained and released afterwards. This conflict of ours will never end. We know that Rocha Moya is shielding your cartel.
The following goes for that coward JL. Commander Comanche wants to battle you. Just say the word whenever you’re ready for this. We can meet up for that confrontation in the same manner that we’ve done it out in the community of Elota. Those gunmen that we have out there will engage you.
They’re not much for small talk but will come out to war against you. Unlike you guys who just run your mouths over the radios while asking that we come closer towards you. We’re already aware that you guys are nothing more than filthy pigs. It took the killing of innocent civilians for us to come out looking for your gang of fucking pigs.
You’re better off giving support to your personnel out in Elota since we’re slowly taking them out. Go out there and help your shooters out instead of challenging Comanche. We’ve already demonstrated for you faggots that we’re not afraid. Stop doing that childish shit of hanging narco messages claiming we’re responsible.
All of the citizens, the townspeople, know that you scumbag vermin are all supported by the government of Rocha Moya. Soon enough your charade will come to an end. Keep killing women and children.
This communique goes out specifically to all of the women out there. Pay close attention. Every female that’s giving the Chapo Zetas aid at the drug spots, gambling dens, acting as guides in patrol vehicles while the gunmen maintain a safe distance behind them. You seem to think that we’re not aware of what’s actually going on.
But the thing is that we’ve got it all figured out already. Stop engaging in bullshit. You’re better off doing something else with your lives. Otherwise, bad things will happen to you. The filthy pigs labels thrown our way will be the only thing used in your defense. You’re each responsible for the harm that comes your way for having helped out these scumbags.
Step away from these matters while you still can. This conflict is man versus man. Between Chapo operatives and Mayos. Only men can engage in this war. Come on out for that armed confrontation whenever you guys are ready. You scumbag murderers of children should already know that we’re on the outskirts of town. Not within the city limits. Long live Mayito Flaco! We hold no fear you fucking faggots.

According to journalists who covered the hearing, Mayo looked more downcast than the previous time, when he was presented before Judge James R. Cho, because now he had a sadder and more distant appearance, as if withdrawn, but he would have been firm in confirming Frank Pérez as his lawyer, even though it could mean a conflict of interest because it is the same defense attorney who negotiated the agreement of his son, Vicente Zambada Niebla, with the prosecutors.
“Are you aware that there is a possibility that this case will go to trial,” Judge Cogan asked. But Mayo Zambada remained firm after a letter was read in Spanish during the hearing, which said: “I do not want a different lawyer.”
According to the US penal code, if the case goes to trial, Frank Perez would be limited when defending Zambada Garcia, because if a process were to begin in which he would have to question his client to confront accusations from the prosecutors, he would no longer be able to do so, nor would he be able to use information obtained during the trial of Vicentillo, which at the time benefited other drug traffickers.
“As that process stands, if required, Vicentillo would have to testify against his own father, and there is nothing that Mayo could do to defend himself, that is why Judge Cogan asked him if he wanted to continue with his own defense, because eventually that would bring limitations,” said an official familiar with the case.
These limitations would reduce the chances that the members of the jury will look favorably on Zambada Garcia, in addition to increasing the probability of a more severe sentence. Therefore, avoiding going to trial would be the most logical strategy for the defense.
The old path
The apparent path that the defense of Mayo Zambada would take, to negotiate with the prosecution, would be the same route that drug traffickers such as the capo's own son, Vicente Zambada, as well as his brother Jesús el Rey Zambada García, as well as leaders of other organizations such as Benjamín Arellano Félix, Osiel Cárdenas Guillén and Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, took at the time.
More recently, in 2023, Ovidio Guzmán López was extradited, as well as one of the coordinators of the criminal group known as Los Chapitos, Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas el Nini.
In the particular case of Ovidio, the agreement with the US authorities was immediate, and it is believed that it would be the brothers Ovidio and Joaquín Guzmán López who orchestrated the capture and subsequent arrest of Ismael el Mayo Zambada, in July 2024.
Even so, the minimum sentence that the Guzmán López brothers, and perhaps Mayo Zambada himself, would receive is 10 to 15 years, for all the damage that the same authorities said at the time that they caused to American society, and for having filed charges of fentanyl trafficking.
Vigil, who was aware of several negotiations that occurred between drug traffickers and prosecutors, said that it will depend on what el Mayo wants to offer, but even with everything he offers, it is possible that he will not get out of jail even by negotiating, due to his age and how sick he is. “I see Mayo as very finished, and even if he collaborates, they will give him at least 20 years, and considering that he is 77 years old, I see it as very difficult for him to get out,” he considered.
Regarding the negotiations that the Guzmán López brothers could be carrying out, Vigil mentioned that although they have in their favor having handed over Zambada García, it will be difficult for them to spend less than 10 years in prison, but at least they will not face life imprisonment or any heavy sentence.
“They have accusations of fentanyl trafficking, but Joaquín and Ovidio were not the only ones who trafficked that drug, also their brothers, who are still free, have been accused, and other members of the Sinaloa Cartel, including Mayo Zambada,” he observed.
If Joaquín and Ovidio continue to collaborate with the United States, at some point they would have to give information about corrupt officials in Sinaloa, about their brothers, and if Mayo Zambada goes to trial, testify against him.
The DEA's new targets
With Ismael el Mayo Zambada and Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán behind bars, the DEA's new targets would be the children of the drug lords: Iván Archivaldo and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, along with Ismael Zambada Sicairos el Mayito Flaco. For the first two, the DEA is offering rewards of 10 million dollars.
According to the DEA's website, the profiles of the three drug traffickers, who apparently lead a war in different municipalities of the state of Sinaloa, are part of the drug traffickers most wanted by the United States government.
The inclusion of el Mayito Flaco on this list dates back to 2015, and since then he has been sought by the authorities. The sons of Chapo Guzmán have been sought since 2008, although it was only last year that the United States authorities increased the reward from 5 to 10 million for each of them.
