Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday she will propose constitutional reforms aimed at protecting Mexico’s sovereignty after U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration designated six Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
The U.S. designations have stirred worry in Mexico that it could be a preliminary step toward U.S. military intervention on Mexican territory in pursuit of the cartels, something Mexico sharply rejects.
“The Mexican people will not accept under any circumstances interventions, interference or any other act from abroad that could be harmful to the integrity, independence and sovereignty of the nation,” Sheinbaum said.
On Thursday, the designation of eight Latin America-based criminal organizations was published in the U.S. Federal Register, carrying out a Jan. 20 executive order by Trump. The U.S. hopes the designation, something usually reserved for terrorist groups with political rather than economic objectives, will increase pressure on the groups.
Sheinbaum said during her daily press briefing Thursday that Mexico also wouldn’t allow outside involvement in investigations or prosecutions without authorization and collaboration of the Mexican government.
Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Sheinbaum’s predecessor, had already written into Mexican law limits to how foreign agents could operate in Mexico, limiting their independence and requiring that Mexican authorities be informed of their movements. Sheinbaum proposes enshrining those limits in the constitution.
“What we want to make clear in the face of this designation is that we do not negotiate sovereignty,” Sheinbaum said. “This cannot be an opportunity for the United States to invade our sovereignty.”
Her administration also proposed reforming the constitution to apply the most severe penalties available under law to foreigners involved in the building, smuggling and distribution of guns. Mexico has long demanded that the U.S. do more to prevent the flood of guns into Mexico from U.S. gun shops and manufacturers.
Her Morena party and its allies hold majorities in both chambers of Congress and have been able to pass a number of other constitutional reforms.

Mexico is challenging the U.S in a way that's never been seen before, and Trump's "make America great again" slogan includes making Mexico dependent on the U.S. let's look at all of the U.S, Canadian and Euuropean exploits that were sold off and are now being taken back and given to the Mexican people. The energy sector was sold off to the Spaniards and has now been partially bought back. Petroleum was partially privatized but with the purchase, renovations and construction of some oil refineries, Mexico is at a point where they can reduce the price of oil so much to were it will destabilize those foreign oil companies. The railroads were privatized and sold off to American and Canadian companies and once again Mexico has challenged that by creating a new railroad that connects a major commercial corridor. Lets also not forget about the tren Maya, it was imported from china not the U.S and built by mexicans, not foreign investors. It's no coincidence that the U.S wants the Panama Canal back, Mexicos construction of the Tehuantepec Isthmus railway put pressure on the U.S to threaten Panama. Mexico also put term limits on foreign mining companies. Just recently Mexico took back some land in Veracruz I believe that was being mismanaged by an american cement company. Mexico also nationalized their Lithium deposits and from my understanding signed a contract with a Chinese mining company who's going to build an electric car company nearby. The U.S is being excluded from all of these deals, why? Because the U.S isn't willing to share the profits, while other countries are. The U.S declaring cartels as terrorist is no different than declaring a war against Iraq to take over their oil fields. It's all smoke and mirrors, the U.S won't say it, and Mexico won't say it, because they're neighbors and trade partners and they must remain diplomatic. The Mexican president must remain stern in her stance, and as a diplomacy tactic, she needs to really put emphasis on Mexicos national sovereignty. She's doing right, she just needs to hang on for 4 years, because she will still be in office once Trump is gone.

Extrajudicial killings are neither accepted in the U.S nor Mexico, so it's not a matter of protecting criminals over law abiding citizens, it's providing equal protection for all as any democracy would.
