Colombia Arrests Former Medellin Cartel Founder Carlos Lehder, Later Released

"Socalj" for Borderland Beat

Carlos Lehder, former drug trafficker and one of the founding leaders of the Medellin Cartel, was arrested on Friday by Colombian authorities upon his arrival from Germany on a warrant in the Latin American country.

UPDATE: Carlos Lehder was released from detention in Colombia. A judge determined that Colombian authorities convicted Lehder for drug trafficking in 1995, while he was serving the separate sentence at a US prison. The cartel boss was sentenced to 24 years in prison in Colombia, meaning his sentence expired in 2019, according to Colombian law.

Lehder had not returned to Colombia since his extradition to the United States in 1987. His lawyer, Sondra Macollins, said he was attempting to visit relatives when he arrived Friday.

Lehder was sentenced to life plus 135 years in prison in 1988 after a Florida court convicted him of cocaine trafficking.

His sentence was later reduced by 55 years after he testified against former Panamanian Dictator Manuel Noriega, and he was released in 2020 due to health issues. He had been living in Germany since then, releasing an autobiographical book last year.

"Lehder Rivas, who arrived in the country from Frankfurt, presented in our information systems an arrest warrant in force," Colombia migration authorities said on X, adding that the former drug lord had been handed over to the police.

Life imprisonment reduced to 50 years, then transferred to Germany after rotting for 33 years is a "sweetheart deal"?

    2. He couldn't stay in the U.S. He was deported to Germany.

    6. @6.09. The "bad things" are probably the torture and murder of hundreds of people, including innocent women and children, let alone the murders he took responsibility for.
"Where you there...do you know him" ?
      Grow up.

    2. @12:24. I wonder if this has anything to do with Fabio Ochoa. Lehder was released in 2020 and lays low in Germany for five years. . Fabio Ochoa was released in December 2024 and returned to Colombia. Now three months later Lehder shows up in Colombia.
Getting together to chop it up about the good old days in the Medellin Cartel?
And in older pictures, you never see Lehder in a suit. Now he comes back to his old stomping grounds dressed to the nines. I bet he was there to reclaim some money he was owed before the US snatched him up 30 years ago.

      Delete
    3. Dressed to the nines?? I'd say dressed to the 4.5s. Maybe because Fabio Ochoa was able to go back he thought he'd be fine too.

It's only a hole. And its only the streets. And its not a game. Lehder can't go in or on any of'em now. He should have treated the game better! And you should shut up and learn history pendejo.

  8. Carlos Lehder is nothing but a lowlife who is likely involved in acts of narcoterrorism in Colombia that occurred during the 1980s that he managed to avoid being prosecuted over, like the 1984 murder of Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara Bonilla. I seriously hope that the Colombian government investigate this and other past crimes more thoroughly so that if there is evidence connecting him, this bastard spends the remainder of his life in prison.

  10. Off-topic, but the headlines to these stories used to be more fun than a barrel of monkeys to read, but sumbody evidently has been proofreading them before they get posted, and as a result, they are no longer chaotic, but well written , edited down and distilled to their essence, to the point, reader friendly, professional, and grammatically sound.

They must have been chaotic, or they wouldn't have gotten them straightened out.
Use your head, it's called LOGIC! 🧐

    4. @4.52. One example? They've been deleted, but there were so many from Sol, and they went on for weeks. "Sicario Learns That His Ass is Grass" (oops, it was an innocent kid, but never mind) "Sicario Learns His Lesson" (oops, it was an armed robbery in Argentina, but never mind). There are so many it's hard to think of just one, and he'd gloat in the comments about getting there first, and never admit he was laughing about the torture of a child because he didn't bother checking.

Sol, though presumably silently lurking nearby, (like a goddam raven tapping at your chamber door), ain't officially here to defend himself, but that boy sure did know how to read a room, by golly, and if he ever sensed his ever-petulant flock of BB readers were lackadaisically straying off-message, he was quick-witted enough to dust off a golden oldie video, maybe a gang mutilation in Brazil or an old zeta massacre, slap on a catchy headline, play up the triple XXX rating, satisfy everybody's bloodlust, thus keeping all his kids happy as clams!
